Watermen's legacy
ROCK HALL — The Kent County Waterman’s Association unveiled the Harry White Watermen’s Memorial on Sunday, July 5 as a highlight of the annual observance of Waterman’s Day. White was a highly regarded and respected builder of wood and fiberglass boats, what one admirer described as “some of the prettiest and hardest working boats on the Chesapeake.” He also was a waterman. KCWA commissioned sculptor Tilghman Hemsley of Queenstown, who also is captain of a charter fishing boat, to make the bronze plaque replica of White’s workshop that adorns the memorial. Waterman's heritage celebrated in Rock Hall
ROCK HALL — The preferred seats for this year’s edition of Waterman’s Day were on the water as a record number of boats anchored in the harbor here on July 5. About 1,200 paying patrons filled the bleachers at the Caroline Avenue bulkhead, a smaller crowd than usual but understandable given that the heat index peaked at 101 degrees. Meantime, about twice as many spectators were out on the water — in workboats, charter boats, small craft and inflatables. A few were even in the water.
