The Democrat and Chronicle has been publishing Jim Memmot’s Remarkable Rochesterians column every week since 2010, and after all that time, he’s added nearly 700 names to his list.

The Irondequoit Historical Society will welcome Jim to the library to talk about some of these Remarkable Rochesterians.

Road Trip!

NEXT THURSDAY (9/24/26): Ida Tarbell and the Muckrakers

Mark Sample, a professor in the History Department at Monroe Community College, will return to the library to spill some ink about Ida Tarbell and the Muckrakers.

This presentation will explore the extraordinary life of journalist Ida Tarbell and the activist press that tried to fight for labor reforms against John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil. Professor Sample will also discuss the economic realities of life at the turn of the 19th century, as well as Standard Oil’s absolute domination of the oil industry.

NEXT THURSDAY (9/3/26) – Irondequoit Historical Society Presents Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario

The Irondequoit Historical Society will welcome Jim Kennard, the author of Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario: A Journey of Discovery, to the library.

Over his 50-year career of exploration, Jim and his team have found more than 200 shipwrecks, including two of the oldest shipwrecks found in the Great Lakes (a British warship lost in 1780 and a sloop lost in 1803). And in 1983 he found a unique horse-powered ferryboat in Lake Champlain (Champ the Lake Monster remains at large).
