CENTURY VS. MAYO: RESULTS FROM THURSDAY OCTOBER 8:

The Century Girls Swimming and Diving team extended their dual meet winning streak to 51 last night, defeating cross-town rival Mayo High School in what was anticipated to be a very close competition. Ultimately, Century won 7 of the 12 events and Mayo won 5, extending the Panther's dual meet winning streak that began in 2021.

On Senior Recognition Night, Century was led by 9th grader Quinn Barrone, who won 3 events. Barrone teamed up with senior backstroker Jian-Gross, fellow 9th grader Delia Wagstaff and 10th grader Karley Maley to win the 200 medley relay. Barrone also had the fastest times in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke with season best times of 2:18.56 and 1:12.95.

Mayo was led by senior freestyler Penelope Hauser, who won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Hauser also led off the Spartan's winning 400 free relay with teammates Celine Herrmann, Madalyn Viers and Halle Yuan. Yuan, a junior, who usually swims the 100 fly for Mayo, showed her versatility, winning the 200 free in 2:01.98 and putting down the two fastest 50 and 100 free relay splits of the meet, a 24.65 in the 200 free relay and a 55.41 anchoring Mayo's winning 400 free relay. That 100 split time was fully 1.3 seconds faster than any of the other 24 swimmers in the event.

Other winners Thursday night included Century junior Ariana Krueger in the 1-m diving, Mayo 10th grader Harper Mueller in the 100 fly, Century junior Alexandra Pool in the 500 free and Century senior Jian-Gross in the 100 backstroke.

Despite Mayo and Century graduating 12 and 9 seniors respectively, both teams have a large group of up-and-coming young swimmers and divers. As if to put an exclamation point on that, Century 7th grader, Kiera Langenbrunner took 5th place in the 1-m diving.

It is worth noting that Mayo was not at full strength for this meet. Three of the top Spartan swimmers were missing, including senior all-around, all-state swimmer Elise Weingarten and the two Tonn sisters, Annabelle and Corrina. All 3 should be back for the Girls Big 9 Conference meet on October 31 at the Rec Center, when Mayo and Century meet again.

Century has two dual meets remaining in order to extend their winning streak. Next Thursday they take on John Marshall at the JM pool. 6 PM.

In other action Thursday, John Marshall took on Red Wing at Red Wing. We don't have any results from that meet. The Red Wing school district dropped out of the Big 9 Conference last year. They have joined a new conference, but the new conference does not have other schools with swimming or hockey programs. Red Wing continues to compete in Section 1A in swimming, with other schools including Austin and Winona.

Century and Mayo Score 1st and 2nd at Austin Invitational.

On Saturday, all 3 Rochester Girls Swimming and Diving teams travelled to Austin (or attempted to) for the annual Spamtown Invitational. Century showed its depth, repeating the victory it won last year, despite graduating 12 varsity swimmers and divers. Century won only one event Saturday as 10th grader Kenzie Brockman placed first in the 100 freestyle, but 6 other Century swimmers finished in scoring positions in the same event. In the 50 free, Century scored 8 swimmers in the top 16, showing depth that other seven teams could not match.

Mayo was led by junior Halle Yuan. Yuan won 3 events, including the 50 freestyle in a time of 26.12. Yuan also contributed to Mayo’s victories in both relays with teammates Penelope Hauser, Emelia Fischer, Madalyn Viers and Corrina Tonn. Fischer also won the 50 breaststroke. Tonn won the 50 fly, leaving Mayo with 5 event victories in the 9-event meet. The multiple wins were not enough to overcome Century’s depth for the team point total.

In a disappointment for John Marshall, bus problems kept the JM Rockets from making the trip to Austin. JM 9th grader Piper Glandon did make it to the meet and placed 4th in the 1-M diving event, scoring 15 points for John Marshall.

In what should be a good meet, Century hosts Mayo for their annual dual meeting next Thursday at 6 pm at the Century pool. JM is on the road.

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING RESULTS TUESDAY AND THURSDAY 9/29 AND 10/1:

On Tuesday, Mayo defeated a young Albert Lea team behind victories in every one of the 12 events except the 200 free relay. Multiple winners for Mayo included Elise Weingarten, Emelia Fischer, Madalyn Viers, Harper Mueller, Halle Yuan and Amelia Dean. Andrea Korol won the diving.

On Thursday night JM hosted Owatonna in an exciting, close competition at the JM pool. Owatonna ultimately prevailed, but the 26 JM swimmers and divers did not make it easy for the guests. JM was led again by senior sprinter Abi Tri who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. 10th grader Madilyn Keller won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Janet Njeru, Kayla Mingo and Eloise Bohn added victories for the JM rockets.

At Century, the Panthers hosted and defeated Albert Lea, winning all but one event. Century was again led by a large number of swimmers including Quinn Barrone, Delia Wagstaff, Alexandra Pool, diver Kendall Langenbrunner, Kenzie Brockman, and Lizzie Jensen. Century remains undefeated.

ROCHESTER SWIMMER KAI JOYNER COMMITS TO CAL BERKELEY

Mayo high school Junior Kai Joyner verbally committed to the University of California, Berkeley this week. As one of the top five recruiting prospects in the nation, his announcement was highly anticipated.

Joyner recently completed a remarkable year of swimming. He won state high school swimming titles in February, completely dominating the 200 and 400 yard freestyle events, setting an all-time Minnesota state record in the 200. His performance at the senior national championships in California led to Joyner being named to the US national team for the Pan Pacific international swimming meet later in the summer. He won the 400 m freestyle event at the junior national championships at the end of July.

Joyner swims with the Rochester swim club, where he is coached by Amy Kilpatrick. During the high school swimming season he competes with the Mayo high school swimming and diving team.

In his Instagram post, Joyner made the following statement:

“I am extremely blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of California, Berkeley. First and foremost, I want to thank God, because none of this would be possible without Him. I also want to thank my friends and family for their tremendous support throughout this process, along with Coach Amy and everyone else who has helped me get to where I am today.
Lastly, I want to thank Coach Dave, Noah, Maya, and the rest of the Cal Swimming & Diving family for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. GO BEARS!”

Girls High School Swimming Results: Thursday 9/24/2026:

Cross-town rivals John Marshall and Mayo met at the JM pool Thursday. In a close meet, both teams won 6 events but Mayo’s depth led the Spartans to a 5-point victory.

Mayo took an early lead as their 200 medley relay team of seniors Elise Weingarten, Emelia Fischer, Penelope Hauser and junior Halle Yuan defeated a much younger JM team. Hauser, Weingarten, Yuan also teamed up with 9th grader Madalyn Viers to win the 200 free relay. Weingarten won the 200 IM, Hauser won the 500 free and Yuan won the 100 fly and placed second to JM senior Abi Tri in the 50 free.

Tri also won the 100 breast for JM. As she did last year, Tri is competing on both the JM swimming and cross country teams during the same season.

Mayo junior, Andrea Korol won the 1-m diving.

JM was led by Tri and some up-and-coming younger swimmers. 9th grader Eloise Bohn won the 200 free. 10th grader Madilyn Keller won the 100 free and took second in the 200 IM. Sophomore Kayla Mingo won the 100 back. Both teams have groups of 7th, 8th and 9th graders that should serve them well in the years to come. As if to make that point clear, JM’s 400 free relay of Mingo (10), Bohn (9), Keller (10) and 7th grader anchor Lyric Berry won the last event of the meet.

Thursday’s meet was the 55th meeting of JM and Mayo since Title IX led to girls swimming programs in 1972. On a historical note, JM and Mayo are both coached by alumni swimmers. JM coach Lauren Kalwasinski swam for JM and still holds several team records. Mayo coach Jessica Koepp was an all-state swimmer for Mayo and then swam for the University of Minnesota.

Century was also in action on Thursday, defeating Winona at the Winona pool. Century won 8 of the 12 events and showed the depth that has allowed the team to win over 60 consecutive dual meets.

Century was led by junior Ally Pool, who won the 200 free, 9th grader Quinn Barrone, who won the 200 IM and 9th grader Delia Wagstaff, who won the 100 fly, with Barrone and Pool in a tie (1:08.23) for second. Showing the strength of Century’s younger swimmers, 10th grader Kenzie Brockman won the 500 free, and 9th grader Josie Bargfrede had the fastest time in the 100 back.

Century had the fastest time in all 3 relays. Barrone and Wagstaff combined with senior JiaYin Jian-Gross and 10th grader Karley Maley to win the 200 medley relay. Maley, Wagstaff, Brockman and Pool won the 200 free relay and Barrone, Pool, Brockman and 9th grader Vivian Peters had the best time in the 400 free relay. All 3 Rochester teams have lots of young swimmers.

Kerwin Engelhart: Rochester Swimming and Diving community mourns the loss of long-time supporter.

Kerwin Engelhart died Thursday, 9/24. He was an influencial JM and Mayo athletic director in the 1980's and 1990's. He also served as the Section 1 administrative director for over 25 years after retiring. Engelhart was a colleague of Dick Thatcher when Thatcher was the JM and Mayo swimming coach and Engelhart was the basketball coach at JM in the 1960's and 1970's. He was instrumental, with Mayo coach Kak Johnson and others, in bringing girls sports to Rochester schools in the 1970's. He served on the MSHSL board for 4 years, the last year as president. The gym at JM is named for him.

Engelhart was an active supporter of the swimming and diving community, often seen at high school swimming and diving events as recently as 4 years ago. Kerwin Engelhart was 97 years old.

GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING RESULTS from Thursday, September 17.

Century hosted Northfield on Thursday. The Panthers defeated Northfield by a 3 point margin, extending their undefeated dual meet record for the season.

Century was led by Kenzie Brockman and Ally Pool. Brockman won both the 100 and 200 freestyle events and Pool won the 50 free and 500 free. Century divers Kendal Lagenbrunner and Ariana Krueger went 1-2 in 1-m diving. Century won both freestyle relays.

JM was scheduled to swim Albert Lea in Albert Lea, but that event was postponed until October 6 because of weather. Apparently the football schedule was changed to Thursday, which changed the swim/dive schedule as well.

Mayo is off until next week.

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING RESULTS FROM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 AND TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 15:

Mayo and Century girls participated in the annual Lakeville relays on Saturday. Century placed second as a team and Mayo took 6th. Mayo's 3x100 butterfly team of Penelope Hauser, Harper Mueller and Halle Yuan provided Rochester teams with a victory. Century showed it's depth, placing in the top 4 in 5 events.

Mayo took on Faribault Tuesday night, winning the meet behind the efforts of many swimmers. Elise Weingarten and Halle Yuan both won 3 events to lead Mayo to victory.

Century takes on Northfield at Century and JM travels to Albert Lea this Thursday. Mayo has a break until next week. Here are the results from Saturday and Tuesday:
