Greater Rochester Coalition for Immigration Justice GRCIJ works to help others see immigration issues in the context of human rights and to promote immigration reform. citizens.

In upstate New York, the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) currently cruises towns, bus and train stations, and roadways for those who might be undocumented, conducts raids, enforces immediate detention and deportation. This has created a climate of immense fear among both documented and undocumented workers and their families, according to numerous area newspaper articles and witnesses to

these events. Ending illegal immigration in a way that is both practical and humane requires that Congress and the President pass comprehensive immigration reform, combining smart border enforcement, a crackdown on employers who violate labor and immigration laws, and a program the requires immigrants in the U.S. illegally to register, pay taxes, and study English on their way to becoming full U.S. This would assure that future immigration is legal and orderly. The wrong way to address the immigration problem is to allow state and local politicians to enact laws that will not solve the problem but will foster discrimination against entire ethnic communities.
