October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and we would not reach a single child without them.

Gifts that leave our workshop land in the hands of a church partner. Pastors and congregations across Metro Detroit carry it the rest of the way, down streets they already know, to families whose names they already have.

We pack the box. They're the ones who put it in a child's hands and make it mean something.

They do it quietly, on top of everything else they're already carrying.

Teenagers are the last ones picked at Christmas.

Not on purpose. A gift for a six year old is easy to imagine and a gift for a fifteen year old isn't.

Picture that morning at fifteen. You're old enough to understand exactly what happened, and old enough to smile about it anyway so nobody feels bad.

What changes it: a good hoodie, headphones, a basketball, art supplies, crossover purses or nail kits.

None of that is complicated. It just tells a teenager somebody thought about them.

On the first really cold morning, every child does a quick calculation about whether they're going to be okay that day.

For some of them it's a coat off a hook without a second thought. For others it's a thin sweatshirt and a hope that the wind stays down.

A winter coat that fits, that's new, that's theirs and not a hand me down two sizes too big, settles that question before it gets asked. In Michigan it's the difference between a child who runs at recess and a child who finds a reason to stay inside.

Our Christmas Outreach shelves need new winter coats, hats, gloves, and warm clothing for every age, straight through teen sizes.

Some child is going to pull on the coat you send and decide it's going to be a good day.

There's a child in Southeast Michigan right now who is already wondering whether anyone will remember them this Christmas. �

That's why we start in October.

For more than 3,500 children to open something on Christmas morning, the shelves have to be full long before December.

Three shelves we're filling this month:

🧥 Winter coats and warm clothing, before Michigan turns cold
🎁 Teen gifts, the shelf that is always the last to fill
💛 Gift sponsorship, for anyone who would rather give than shop

All three end up in the same place, which is a child holding something and realizing somebody was thinking about them.

Because of you, our shelves look different than they did a month ago.

Thank you to everyone who shopped our Wish List, dropped off new items, or gave so we could shop the sales ourselves. Every pair of socks and every package of underwear supplies the basic needs for one more child this Chrismas.

There's still more to do, and our Christmas Outreach ramp continues from here.

Right now, our shelves do not have enough new socks and underwear for the more than 3,500 children we will serve this Christmas.

One week left, and our shelves still aren't where they need to be.

The Ministry Bus Tour is back this fall, and we'd love for you to ride with us.

On Thursday, October 29, our Executive Director Patti Jacques and Jenny Jaroneski, Launch & Outreach Coordinator of CrossPointe Center for the Trades, will lead a one-day guided bus tour of ministries serving our neighbors across Metro Detroit.

📍 We gather at 9 a.m. at Faith Lutheran ChurchTroy
🙏 The morning opens with a presentation about Elli's House 313, a Detroit nonprofit offering safe shelter, mentoring, and outreach to women affected by human trafficking
🚌 From there, we visit ministries across the city, including our own CKC Center
🍽️ Lunch is included

The cost is $30, which covers bus transportation and lunch. Registration is handled by the Michigan District, LCMS. Space is limited, so register early.

Our shelves are empty right now, heading straight into the Christmas season.

That's not where we want to be. Retail is always a season ahead of the calendar: coats show up in July, bathing suits in January. If we want every child on our Christmas Outreach list to have what they need by December, we have to start filling the shelves now, not later.
