Dr. Carol Anne St. George and I are honored to be featured in the latest edition of Rochester Woman Online Magazine for the work I am doing through Let’s Get L.I.T. Liberating Individuals Through Literary Texts, and what she is doing with the University of Rochester - Warner School of Education.
This article, “Where Your Attention Goes When You Turn the Page,” explores something deeply important to us: in a world constantly competing for our attention, reading remains one of the few spaces where children and families can slow down, connect, imagine, and truly focus.
Through the summer literacy and family engagement programs, we are creating more than readers , we are creating safe spaces for curiosity, confidence, healing, and community. Watching children light up while holding a book that reflects them, hearing families read together, and seeing young people discover the power of their own voice reminds me why this work matters.
Literacy is not just about academics. It is about liberation, attention, identity, and opportunity. Every page turned is a chance for a child to see beyond limitations and step into possibility.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support the vision of L.I.T., and the work Dr. St. George does within the hearts of our community , our families, community partners, educators, and the village that believes every child deserves access to joyful and meaningful literacy experiences. Special thanks to Rochester Woman Online Magazine for helping elevate this conversation and spotlight the importance of intentional reading in today’s world.
The work continues one child, one family, one book, and one story at a time.
