My heart overflows with joy and gratitude, these remarkable young women from Mercy have forever etched themselves in my heart. Literacy, my lifelong passion, was beautifully brought to life as these young ladies joined me last summer, allowing me to witness their transformative growth, resilience, compassion, and dedication to advocacy, evoking both immense joy and tears of pride. I am deeply humbled by the gesture of them delivering my floor seat ticket to their graduation. Let's Get L.I.T. transcends being just a literacy program, it's about forging unbreakable bonds, fostering unity, and empowering the next generation to grasp the liberating power of literacy.

Rochester’s young creatives are taking center stage!

The 2nd Annual Comic Empowerment Awards is more than an event, it’s a celebration of imagination, storytelling, leadership, and opportunity for our youth. From original comics created by students to community organizations opening doors through internships, scholarships, and career readiness, this is where creativity meets empowerment.

Join us on May 20th from 10 AM – 1 PM at Central Library Hacker Hall as we honor the brilliance and talent of young people across Rochester.

Expect:
• A youth comic awards ceremony
• Student vendors showcasing original comics
• Community partners investing in the future of our youth
• Inspiration, connection, and celebration

Lunch will be provided.

Let’s continue creating spaces where young people can dream boldly, tell their stories, and see themselves as heroes in real life.

Dr. Carol Anne St. George and I are honored to be featured in the latest edition of Rochester Woman Online Magazine for the work I am doing through Let’s Get L.I.T. Liberating Individuals Through Literary Texts, and what she is doing with the University of Rochester - Warner School of Education.

This article, “Where Your Attention Goes When You Turn the Page,” explores something deeply important to us: in a world constantly competing for our attention, reading remains one of the few spaces where children and families can slow down, connect, imagine, and truly focus.

Through the summer literacy and family engagement programs, we are creating more than readers , we are creating safe spaces for curiosity, confidence, healing, and community. Watching children light up while holding a book that reflects them, hearing families read together, and seeing young people discover the power of their own voice reminds me why this work matters.

Literacy is not just about academics. It is about liberation, attention, identity, and opportunity. Every page turned is a chance for a child to see beyond limitations and step into possibility.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the vision of L.I.T., and the work Dr. St. George does within the hearts of our community , our families, community partners, educators, and the village that believes every child deserves access to joyful and meaningful literacy experiences. Special thanks to Rochester Woman Online Magazine for helping elevate this conversation and spotlight the importance of intentional reading in today’s world.

The work continues one child, one family, one book, and one story at a time.

Empowering minds through literacy unlocks transformative potential; by providing standards-driven instruction that fosters critical thinking, expressive communication, and a deeper appreciation for the rich literary heritage of African American authors, educators can ignite a profound impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Tonight was a testament to the power of collaboration with Pre-K families from RCSD, as we came together to explore how Every Child Is A Super Reader: Being Your Child’s First Advocate. Through engaging discussions and meaningful connections, parents and community partners gained valuable insights and practical tools to support their children's literacy journey, taking a significant step towards conquering the literacy crisis. By working together, we can unlock the greatness that lies within our children and our community.
