At Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in West Virginia, you’ll ride a real “man car” deep into the historic Phillips-Sprague Mine, which began operating in 1889. Guided by former miners, you’ll navigate dim, narrow tunnels and see firsthand how coal was once extracted entirely by hand. Back above ground, explore the restored coal camp, complete with a miner’s family home, one-room schoolhouse, bachelor’s shanty, and a coal company store filled with period artifacts. The site captures how every aspect of life...work, school, church...centered on the mines. Be sure to visit the Rahall Company Store Museum for an even deeper look into Beckley’s rich mining history.

Doors open at 7pm and close at midnight. The earlier you arrive the more time you get to explore. You will be given a wrist band for reentry if you leave the property and come back.

All lights within the building will be turned off except in the middle building for check in. Only emergency exit lights and the main stairwell will be lit. Flashlights will be your best friend as you dive deep into all 44,000k sqft of the Fairfield County Infirmary. We ask that you bring your own flashlight (no military grade flashlights permitted). If by chance you don’t have one, we will have low grade ones for you to use.

Hidden deep in the Smoky Mountains is the “House of Fairies,” also known as the Fairy House...an old stone springhouse built into the hillside just off Twin Creeks Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But what was it for...and who built it? To find that out, you have to go back to the 1920s. The springhouse was created by Louis E. Voorheis, a Cincinnati businessman who bought the 38-acre Twin Creek estate in 1928 to create a peaceful mountain retreat. Fascinated by water’s beauty and utility, he developed a hydroelectric dam, water-powered mill, and landscaped gardens with pools and fountains. Though abandoned, the House of Fairies still stands as a tribute to his unique vision...and other historic structures can still be found nearby along the trail.
