Right next to the present day Flying Squirrel community center on the corner of Clarissa and Troup Street you will now see a vacant parking lot. Fifty two years ago, this now empty lot held the epicenter of Black culture in Rochester, The Pythodd Club.
The first image included shows how the Pythodd looked from the 1940s to the 1970s as it functioned as one of the most iconic Black jazz clubs in the city. Started as a gentleman’s club, the Pythodd quickly opened its doors to new performers and the larger Clarissa Street community. With its reputation as a community meeting point and a jazz Mecca it rapidly secured its position as a Nationally renowned club.
As performers started traveling to Rochester to play at the Pythodd, it became integrated in the “Chitlin Circuit”, the informal “Green Book” for Black entertainers.
Thus, performers such as Stevie Wonder, George Benson, and P*e Wee Ellis were known to come to the Pythodd Club.
In 1972 the Pythodd closed its doors for the final time and the building was demolished as route 490 was completed.
Though, the joys of the Pythodd still live on in Rochester performers to this day. We welcome folks to come and visit our replica of the Pythodd stage at the Clarissa Uprooted Exhibit soon!

The next time you travel down West Main Street be sure to check out the Clarissa Street Mural. This mural was created last August to embolden the memory of Clarissa Street and ensure that the joys of the neighborhood remain where parts of Clarissa Street once stood before 490 was built.
With the backdrop of old Clarissa Street buildings, you can see youth performers and activists displayed alongside famous musicians from the Pythodd Club.

The lasting memory of the Clarissa Street village is kept alive by the Clarissa Street Reunion and it’s committee.

For those of you who don’t know, nearly 25 years after Clarissa Street was uprooted by urban renewal, friends and community members joined together and created a reunion to reflect the street dances and memories of their youth. The first reunion in 1996 set the Rochester record for the largest first-run event with nearly 10,000 attendees. Now, almost 30 years after the first reunion, thousands of attendees still walk the remaining three blocks of Clarissa Street, between Troup Street and Dr. Samuel McCree Way. Visitors are welcome to listen to live performances from renowned artists and youth performers and enjoy food vendors that fill the streets. Thanks to the reunion committee, our exhibit was created and stands as a testament to the lives and memories of Clarissa Street. Please join us in August for a reunion celebration! As famously stated by reunion member, Hubert Jeffries, “it ain’t nothing but a party!”
