HUGS gives smiles, and this caring father gives them to us! 💙

Communication is key, especially while on a mission abroad; HUGS partners with local translators and volunteers to help us talk with our patients and their families, but sometimes unexpected challenges arise. On our last
mission, some patients came from rural Mayan villages where they don't speak modern Spanish, creating a new hurdle.

This family who came to us seeking treatment for their son's cleft lip & palate stepped up and saved the day; The dad offered to help Maria, our translator, to speak to families in several of the 22 distinct Mayan languages in Guatemala. He helped us work with at least 7 other families and along with the rest of our team helped us to change more lives and provide more
care.

💙 Last week, the HUGS team performed 63 surgeries for our lovely patients while on our largest annual mission in Guatemala. Between intake day on Sunday where our fantastic volunteers connected with hopeful patients to the last round between beds on Saturday, we were so grateful for the opportunity to treat our microtia, cleft lip and cleft palate patients with the love and care they deserve. These moments are just a few of the highlights from the week!

🧡 Our magical team that made this mission possible was comprised of 32 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and administrators from 7 states and 2 different countries – and that’s before we factor in the countless individuals who helped prepare for this week both in Guatemala and in the US. There are months of work that lead to a mission like this one.

🎉 Please join us in welcoming Hallie Littlefield-Topham to the HUGS Foundation team! 🎉

Hallie recently joined HUGS as our new Administrative Development Assistant and is excited to be part of an organization that not only provides free surgical care for congenital facial deformities, but also a lifetime of self-confidence, authenticity, and most importantly, smiles for the people we serve.

An all-around creative both in and out of the office, Hallie enjoys being on the go around Rochester and in her community.

We are thrilled to have Hallie's many talents helping us advance the HUGS mission to make a difference in the lives of so many.

From the recovery rooms in Ecuador to the clinics in Vietnam and beyond, these dedicated professionals provide more than just medical care—they provide comfort, strength, and a hand to hold for our patients and their families.
