Relay For Life of Mower County

Relay For Life of Mower County Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognize and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, or the ones we lost.

Relay for Life is a celebration of cancer survivorship and community spirit. The event began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Washington, colorectal surgeon raised $27,000 for the fight against cancer by running the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound for 24 hours. Klatt's friends paid $25.00 to run or walk 30 minutes with the doctor as he logged more than 83 miles throu

ghout the night. In 1986, 19 teams took part in Washington's first team relay event raising $33,000. Today, more than 4,400 Relays occur throughout the U.S., with 16 nations joining the efforts for more than three million total participants. Together, survivors and those impacted by cancer have raised more the $364 million worldwide. In addition to honoring survivors, Relay for Life raises much-needed funds for American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy, and patient services.

“We survived round four of chemo. Mommy had to manage solo, but it wasn’t so bad today. I don’t think I’ve seen Sydney hug and say hi to so many people. She was a little social butterfly. She’s definitely getting more comfortable being there. She hates having her port accessed, but I expect it to always be a struggle.” - Sydney

Due in part to lack of committee members and volunteers Relay of Mower County will not have any more Relay For Life events as of 2022. This is bittersweet for the organizing committee as the year 2022 would have been the events 30th Anniversary of being held in Austin.

The committee would like to thank the residents of the city of Austin and surrounding communities in Mower County, for supporting our efforts to raise funds for Cancer Research, Education and Patient Services over the last 29 years.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send a message to this page and we will do our best to answer them.

If you have interest in participating as a committee member or volunteer in the future, it may be possible to revive this event.

If you would like to participate in a Relay For Life event there are still some that take place in Freeborn and Dodge Counties that would welcome you.

They did it! Last night, after months of delay, Congress passed a budget that increases funding for cancer research. We know this funding is long overdue and desperately needed. Thank you to the thousands of ACS CAN volunteers who raised their voices to help make this happen.

This is a big step. But we also know Congress can do more. Stay tuned for more opportunities to make your voice heard when Congress starts negotiating this year’s budget bill.

“Today marks one year since my cancer diagnosis. I received the phone call in the middle of my work day where I was told that I needed to admit myself to the ER immediately. Just a few days before, I was told it was suspected that I had Crohn’s disease. While I had already been misdiagnosed twice that summer, “you have colon cancer” were the last words I was expecting to hear. I went into the ER petrified and totally alone, thanks to Covid.

I have so many feelings about that day, and thought I would wake up this morning with a huge array of emotions to sort through. But the one feeling that keeps rising to the top of my heart today is gratitude.

Immense gratitude. For the friends and family who have been by my side for the past 365 days. For my body, whose endured so much pain and suffering this past year, yet persevered. For the simple moments in life, to the grand moments, to the mundane ones- I’m grateful for them all. Grateful to be cancer-free.” - Aeryn
