On April 15, Chancellor Kent Syverud shared with our community that he has been diagnosed with a form of brain cancer and has begun treatment. In his letter, he spoke of optimism, determination and gratitude for the Orange community he has led for more than twelve years.

A page has been set up for students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends to send encouragement, share a memory or simply say thank you. Every message will be collected and shared with the Chancellor and his family. 🍊

Congratulations to all of the 2026-2027 Remembrance Scholars, including three from the Rochester area:

-Mason Burley of Webster, New York, an inclusive adolescent education major in the School of Education and history major in the Maxwell School and A&S.

-Shivika Gupta of Rochester, New York, a political science major in the Maxwell School and A&S and law, society and policy major in the Maxwell School.

-Alexis Heveron of Rochester, New York, a chemical engineering major in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS).

Congratulations to the 35 students selected as 2026-27 Remembrance Scholars.

Now in their 37th year, the Remembrance Scholarships honor the 35 students studying abroad through the University who were killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on Dec. 21, 1988.

Each year, a new cohort of scholars is chosen for their community impact, leadership, creativity and academic inquiry, and they plan the Remembrance activities held on campus each fall. 🕊️

The voice of "Sunday Night Football" is coming home to address the Class of 2026. 🎓

NBC Sports broadcaster Mike Tirico '88 will deliver the Commencement address on May 10 at the JMA Wireless Dome. An alumnus of the Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and Newhouse School at Syracuse University, Tirico launched his career at WAER Syracuse Public Media, the campus radio station where he first found his voice in sports broadcasting.

Since then, he's called play-by-play for professional and college football, the NBA on NBC, the Masters, the FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon and five Olympics.

Earlier this year, he became the first U.S. broadcaster to call the Super Bowl and host a Winter Olympics in the same year. He currently serves as vice chair of the Syracuse University Board of Trustees.

“There is no place that has meant more to me than Syracuse University,” says Tirico. "It is an incredible honor to be asked to address the Class of 2026 and welcome them to our proud family of Orange alums." 🍊
