University of Rochester Engineers Without Borders USA Welcome to University of Rochester Engineers without Borders! Weekly meetings are on Tuesdays at 7:30-9 pm in Douglas 403.

The University of Rochester Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-UR) seeks to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects. We provide an environment for students to apply their academic skills to real world problems in an internationally responsible and globally beneficial way

. Our vision is a world in which all communities have the capacity to meet their basic human needs. Our first and longest project is in Don Juan, Dominican Republic. The town of Don Juan is rural and remote and the aim of our project is to supply their primary school (Escuela Taller Santa Maria Josefa Rossello) with clean water.

Initially, the school was not able to supply running water to its five buildings due to daily electrical power outages. Through six trips to the Dominican Republic (the first being in 2015), we have successfully installed solar panels, a chlorination system, and provided water to all the buildings! We are currently working on continuing our relationship with this community by starting another project with them as well as maintaining the current water system.

Learn more about our project in Tanzania. The nearest untreated water supply for Naramat, a remote village in Tanzania, is nearly an hour's walk away. Villagers walk every morning over an hour to get access to this untreated water.

To solve the problem, we are sending a group of students to the local community of Naramat to assess the quality of water and to design a well closer to the community that will provide easy access to purified water.

We will collaborate with the Naramat Village Community and Weston Turville Wells for Tanzania to solve the major issue of access to clean water while also trying to solve several minor issues that the community faces using engineering techniques and skills.

Thank you Dwight for your support!! We wouldn’t be who we are without you, and look forward to working together and learning from you!

Dwight Harrienger serves as a mentor for the University of Rochester chapter of EWB-USA, working to bring reliable water to students and families in the Don Juan Village of the Dominican Republic.

“In many ways, being a part of EWB-USA reminds me of why I chose to be an engineer. Staying with families in-country gives you a wonderful personal connection to the area and the community. Helping the University of Rochester students grow in technical ability and confidence is very rewarding. For me, it is more challenging and rewarding to see the students work through a challenge themselves to arrive at a solution than to just impose a solution for them.”

Today some of our members visited the Taproot Collective in Rochester. As part of our local project, we aim to help Taproot Collective develop a sustainable water collection and distribution system for their greenhouse and crops. Today we met with Amber who gave us a tour, shared with us the Collective's goals, and gave us some ideas for how we can help. We look forward to this partnership and are excited to design and implement a solution!

Thank you to Amber for meeting with us today as well as our mentor Dwight for coming on this trip!
