Join us for our annual Opening Day get-together on Paint Creek Saturday, April 25th at the Rochester Municipal Park!

As usual, we will have a booth set up behind the amphitheater with complimentary snacks, waters, and other goodies. Typically we plan to show up around 10:00am, rain or shine, to socialize and strategize for a while before breaking off to fish and enjoy the opener. Bring your fishing gear, dress for the weather, and maybe bring some flies to trade! Please make sure that your wading gear is clean to help combat the spread of invasive species like Didymo and New Zealand Mud Snails.

Vanguard TU's last Fly-Tying night for the season is Monday April 20th at Towne Square Pizza. Tying will start at 7:00 PM. Many of us will be meeting around 6:00 PM for a drink and/or food. April’s pattern is Barry Ord Clarke’s version of the classic Pheasant Tail Nymph.

For those new to fly tying, we looked for a video that focused on techniques as well as tying a great pattern. Mr. Clarke states “I am showing techniques that may look challenging, but are totally achievable with a little patience and practice”.

Join us Monday, March 23rd at Granchi's Towne Square Pizza at 7:00pm for our Fly Tying night!

This month we will be tying the Tim Flagler's Turbo Beetle - a fun and easy to tie terrestrial that works wonders on Paint Creek! Bring black thread if you have it, all other materials will be provided.

Pizza and drinks will be available for purchase. Some of us will be meeting here at 5:30pm to eat and catch up beforehand, and we encourage anyone else to join us!

Please join us on Thursday, March 12th for the annual meeting of Vanguard Chapter Trout Unlimited. If you can only attend one member meeting per year, this is the one that your presence is encouraged as leadership will be reporting on the overall health of the Vanguard Chapter and putting up to member vote the five (5) board positions that are soon becoming available.

In addition, Jeremy Geist, Great Lakes Stream Restoration Manager for Trout Unlimited, will give a presentation on the conservation efforts that are targeted for TU’s ‘priority waters’ in Michigan. Complimentary pizza and soda pop will be served at 7:00pm with the meeting commencing at 7:30pm. Adult beverages are available for purchase separately.

CORRECTION - fly tying will be on Tuesday, February 24th (not the 26th) at Granchi's Towne Square Pizza at 7:00pm.

This month we will be tying the White Death, a zonker-style streamer meant to imitate a dead or dying emerald shiner. Great for bass, steelhead, and picky trout on days where nothing else seems to work! This pattern requires 2 bobbins with both red and black thread. We will have a few extra bobbins if you don’t have 2. Hooks and materials will be provided.

We'll also be at a new location, where pizza and drinks will be available for purchase. Some of us will be meeting here at 5:30pm to eat and catch up beforehand, and we encourage anyone else to join us!

Our guest speaker this month is Ron Barch of Alder Creek Angling, who will be covering how to build bamboo fly rods. Ron has been building and teaching all things bamboo since 1985 and, through a video presentation and Q/A, will give us some great insight on how split-cane rods are built! Supporters of Vanguard Chapter Trout Unlimited,

I am writing to you this holiday season to provide an update on the tremendous conservation work that Vanguard Chapter Trout Unlimited has done on Paint Creek and to humbly ask that you consider making a donation to the chapter to help fund additional work that is planned for 2026.

This past September, the Vanguard Chapter orchestrated the installation of (42) log vanes on Paint Creek as part of phase 4 of the Paint Creek Instream Habitat Improvement Initiative. Since this effort began in 2018, we have installed (145) log vanes along 1.4 miles of the creek that stretches from the south end of the Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve upstream to an area a few hundred yards south of Dutton Road. These vanes provide numerous benefits including providing habit for trout, improving creek flow, and reversing the negative impact from bank erosion.

Please help us fully fund the conservation work planned for 2026 by making a financial donation to Vanguard Chapter Trout Unlimited today.

Join us Tuesday, November 18th at Dinosaur Hill at 7:30pm for our Fly Tying night! This month's fly is a classic Michigan pattern and one of our favorite flies for night fishing, the Houghton Lake Special. Bring black/dark thread if you have it. As always, anyone is welcome to come and no experience is needed! Some of us meet for dinner at RJ's Pub around 5:30, you are more than welcome to join us.
