📚 September is officially back-to-school season! 🍎

In honor of the people and programs that make OU special, this month we’re highlighting “Environment for Education & Lifelong Learning” at Oakland University.

A strong learning environment is about more than spaces where students learn — it’s also about the alumni, educators and partners who support students along the way.

At Oakland University, the Determination and Resilience through Education, Achievement and Motivation (DREAM) Initiative is helping first-generation college students find the support and sense of belonging they need to succeed.

Codesigned by OU and the Diploma Equity Project, the donor-funded pilot provided mentorship, proactive support and individualized financial aid counseling to help students navigate the college experience while building confidence and community.

With support from a MiLEAP Student Success Go Big Grant, OU is scaling lessons from DREAM to reach approximately 900 incoming first-generation students each year.

Beyond DREAM, donor-funded scholarships are also helping to open doors and create opportunities for first-generation students to thrive at Oakland University.

By nurturing an environment where students feel supported from the start, OU is helping more first-generation college students pursue their education and confidently build a path toward graduation. 🎓

🏠OU Through the Ages: Residential Life on Campus

As campus comes back to life for the start of the next school year, we are excited for the students to move-in this coming Monday and Tuesday! These students will get the opportunity to call OU home for the next 8 months 🖤💛

What started as only a few dorm buildings has now expanded to include five residence halls, two apartment complexes and three Greek cottages that house over 2,500 residents.

Our housing community provides these students with a foundation of stability, belonging and community as well as the basis for the academic engagement that helps students persist and graduate. According to research and experiences, students who live on campus are more likely to stay enrolled and persist to graduation, build meaningful relationships with peers, faculty and staff, develop a stronger sense of belonging, graduate on time and remain connected alumni.

Although dorm life might have changed in looks over the decades, OU’s commitment to this community and what it means for our students has stayed steadfast.

From celebrating 50 years of Golden Grizzlies to Oktoberfest fun, an alumni BBQ and a special faculty & staff luncheon, there’s something for everyone during OU Homecoming Weekend, October 8–10!

🍽️ Alumni Faculty & Staff Luncheon - Oct. 8 | 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
Connect with fellow alumni faculty and staff over lunch, raffles, prizes and more.

🥨 OU Oktoberfest - Oct. 9 | 6–9 p.m.
Enjoy German entertainment, dancing, Oktoberfest-inspired fare, a Hall tour and more at Meadow Brook Hall. Lederhosen encouraged!

🎓 Golden Reunion Celebration - Oct. 9 | 10 a.m.–noon
Celebrate the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1976 with brunch at Meadow Brook Hall, followed by a campus bus tour. Alumni from the Class of 1976 and earlier are invited to attend and celebrate.

From building a professional website from scratch to setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, Devin says his experiences at Oakland University continue to influence how he approaches his business. Today, he is putting that knowledge into action as he builds custom homes in Oakland Township and beyond.
