An understanding of the past and its multiple and often conflicting interpretations, is essential to being an informed citizen of the United States and participant in the global environment of the modern world. The Center for Public History at Nazareth College will forge a link between the scholarly endeavors of academic historians and the broader community in order to promote a sense of history’s

relevance. The Center promotes relationships among universities, museums and cultural centers, K-12 teachers, libraries, and governmental institutions at the local, state, and national levels. Its goal is to foster among college students and the broader public an understanding of the construction, preservation, and interpretation of our shared history, which occurs in many forms. These include, but are not limited to, historic sites, artifacts, monuments, and the variety of forms of modern media that serve as evidence of the moments and events of the past.

The Obama Center opened and will house exhibits on the Obama presidency and host a branch of the Chicago Public Library. Much of the work of the Obama presidency was issued digitally so there is no archive to speak of, but the National Archives will oversee that content.

More than 500 guests gathered at the Obama Presidential Center along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the city that launched Barack Obama’s trajectory to the White House as the country’s first Black president.
