An understanding of the past and its multiple and often conflicting interpretations, is essential to being an informed citizen of the United States and participant in the global environment of the modern world. The Center for Public History at Nazareth College will forge a link between the scholarly endeavors of academic historians and the broader community in order to promote a sense of history’s

relevance. The Center promotes relationships among universities, museums and cultural centers, K-12 teachers, libraries, and governmental institutions at the local, state, and national levels. Its goal is to foster among college students and the broader public an understanding of the construction, preservation, and interpretation of our shared history, which occurs in many forms. These include, but are not limited to, historic sites, artifacts, monuments, and the variety of forms of modern media that serve as evidence of the moments and events of the past.

RIP David Anderson (1930-2026).

Dr. David A. Anderson (1930-2026) fought injustice, as an educator he understood the power of history. He told an interviewer "As African Americans, we need to regard our story as a sacred trust to pass on. By so doing, we will continue to stride toward freedom."

He was featured in two of our podcasts - "The North Star of Public History" and "David Anderson and the Crusade Against Lead Paint." His funeral will be at Nazareth University on Thursday August 20 at 10 a.m.

He was in the best sense of the word a teacher, whose life changed the to world for so many of us.

We’ve gained a new ancestor.

Dr. David Anderson was more than a historian and educator. He was a keeper of our stories, a teacher of generations, and a steward of Rochester’s history and legacy.

His contributions to our community will live on through the people he taught, the stories he preserved, and the history he helped us understand and remember.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, students, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest well, Dr. Anderson. Your work mattered. Your legacy remains. 🕊️

Pataki now has a namesake structure: a two-story brick building in Albany, a few blocks from the State Capitol, where he reigned from 1995 to 2006.
