The past week, especially as this year draws to a close, has been one of quiet reflection. For the first time in my forty years, I can look back on something I created and bring it to a close with admiration.

Opening night of The 540WMain Legacy Exhibition felt like a family reunion. So many people who shaped this work, supported it, believed in it, and carried it with me over the years came back together one last time to witness what we built.

Seeing these images still feels surreal. They hold the stories, the faces, the joy, the chaos, the care, and the Black brilliance that defined 540WMain from the very beginning.

The exhibition remains on view at The Yards Collective through December 31 if you’d like to experience it in person.

𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔, I’ve been resting, reflecting, and holding everything that Friday made possible.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 540𝑾𝑴𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒄𝒚 𝑬𝒙𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 was more than I imagined, and I’m still taking it in slowly. I’ve also received many beautiful messages from folks who couldn’t attend but reached out to share what this work meant to them. The legacy travels far.

𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉, paused with the work, shared stories, or simply stood quietly in the space. Deep gratitude to Kristina Kaiser, Amanda Smith, Chris Thompson, Rajae Wright, and Allison McDonald for the labor, creativity, and care that made this moment possible. This gathering was shaped by many hands.

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆, I intentionally put my phone down at an event and chose to be fully present.

𝑰 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, took in the people around me, and trusted the documentation to the professionals. That also means I have very few photos of my own.

𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒐𝒔, 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒎𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚. Rajae Wright and Allison McDonald captured the evening beautifully, and I’ll be sharing a full photo gallery soon.

A decade of work leaves behind more than classes. It leaves behind meaning.

Tonight, the 540WMain Legacy Exhibition brings those stories together, curated at The Yards. This gathering invites us to ask a simple, powerful question: What does 540 mean to you? A classroom. A conversation. A place to belong. A moment that changed something.

The work on view reflects how people came together across difference to learn, to question, and to imagine something better. These stories hold both memory and possibility.

Tomorrow we gather.

Tomorrow night we come together to honor a chapter that changed my life. 540WMain began with a belief that community education matters and that people deserve spaces to grow without judgment.

What happened over nine years exceeded anything I could have imagined. You showed up. You learned with me. You held this mission with honesty, grace, and heart.

As we prepare to gather, I want to say thank you. Thank you for trusting this work.

Thank you for choosing to be part of something rooted in care and justice.
I hope to see you tomorrow evening as we close this chapter together.

If you are joining us on Friday for the 540WMain Legacy Exhibition, here is your simple guide to everything you need to know before you arrive.

This event was designed to be welcoming, easy, and open. You can drop in anytime between 6 and 9 PM and move through the archival displays, artwork, and stories at your own pace.

Tickets follow a gift economy structure from 0 to 60 dollars, which means you choose the amount that feels right for you. Your contributions help support the cost of producing this final celebration and compensating the collaborators who helped make it possible.

The Yards is located inside the Rochester Public Market between Flour City Bakery and Cure. Look for the bright door and head upstairs. Please note that the space can only be reached by stairs, and there is no elevator. ASL interpreting will be available throughout the evening.

Most of all, come as you are. Wear what feels comfortable. Stay for ten minutes or stay for all three hours. Your presence is what matters.

As I step into these last days before the Legacy Exhibition, I keep returning to what this work has taught me.

Community education is slow, patient, and deeply relational.
It grows from people choosing to learn together, even when the world feels heavy.

- 540WMain has been a place where that kind of learning could breathe.
- A place where accountability and curiosity lived side by side.
- A place where we imagined what justice and care could look like in practice.

This week, I honor every person who helped carry this work forward. It has been a privilege to build this with you.

𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒄𝒚 & 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆.

540WMain was built by the community. Volunteers, neighbors, educators,
parents, artists, students, and elders.

Every class, every panel, every conversation happened because people were willing to show up and build something bigger than themselves.

I learned early on that the heart of this movement was not the programming. It was the people. The ones who believed in the mission before it had a name. The ones who held space for learning and accountability. The ones who pushed me to imagine new possibilities.

As we approach the final exhibition, I want to honor that shared labor. The legacy of 540WMain belongs to every person who poured their time, wisdom, and trust into this work. Next week, we celebrate all of you.

In February 2023, 540WMain was named one of Rochester’s Black History Month trailblazers by the Democrat & Chronicle, joining a list that included community icons like Constance Mitchell, Franklin Florence, Danielle Ponder, and many others.

This recognition affirmed what we already knew: that our story is not separate from Rochester’s history, but part of a lineage of Black-led movements, art, and education that stretches back generations.

On December 12, 2025, we will gather not just to close a chapter, but to place our story firmly within the broader history of this city.
