Co-Founder/Chief Development Officer
[email protected]

A 2001 graduate of the School of the Arts, Nick holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Philosophy from SUNY Buffalo State (2005) and a Master's in Social Work from Nazareth College and SUNY Brockport (2011).

Raised in the tenth ward of Rochester in a single-parent household facing mental health challenges, domestic violence, and poverty, Nick's personal journey fuels his commitment to equality, diversity, and community care. With a deep understanding of homelessness challenges, Nick leverages his extensive background in homeless outreach, community engagement, non-profit partnerships, and training to advocate for housing as a fundamental human right.

Nick is dedicated to fostering systemic change, creating enduring partnerships, and empowering participants with the skills needed for effective implementation of Housing First. His approach, rooted in compassion and cultural sensitivity, emphasizes client-centered care, trauma-informed practices, and collaboration, contributing to sustainable pathways out of homelessness and enhancing the skills of housing advocates and teams. Through his work, Nick advances PCHO Inc.'s mission to address, prevent, and alleviate chronic homelessness in Monroe County and surrounding communities.

Housing First is an evidence-based systems approach to homelessness that prioritizes providing permanent housing without prerequisites or conditions (beyond those of a typical renter) to people experiencing homelessness so that they can pursue personal goals and improve their quality of life. This approach is in contrast to outdated Treatment First approaches that aim to address addiction, mental illness and social pathologies prior to placing individuals in housing.

Please encourage Maplewood residents who are concerned about walking in the area of Lake/Driving Park to sign up to participate in the City's Walk Audit of that area on June 9th.

How to get involved

We want to hear from you! There will be multiple opportunities to get involved with the development of Area Pedestrian Safety Studies:

Walking Audits. In June 2026, the City of Rochester will conduct 5 walking audits of 5 streets/areas. A walk audit is a structured activity hosted by representatives of the City, starting with one-hour walk in an area of concern (see below) in which participants observe things like crossings, traffic speeds, sidewalk conditions, accessibility—and share what feels safe or unsafe based on experience. The walk is followed by a meeting where community members join representatives of the City to discuss safety concerns and potential solutions. The 5 walking audits will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm, rain or shine, and are scheduled as follows:

Tuesday June 9th: Driving Park Avenue from Lake Avenue to the Genesee River and Lake Avenue from Driving Park Avenue to Eldorado Place (0.4 miles)

Overview

These safety studies are a part of a larger Safe Streets For All (SS4A) Project. The SS4A Project is funded through a US Department of Transportation grant to help improve road safety in Rochester. You can read more about this project and its 4 components at this link.

SS4A (Safe Streets for All) Area Pedestrian Safety Studies will include comprehensive strategies to improve roadway safety and reduce fatalities and serious injuries. The studies will focus on pedestrians of all ages and abilities, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

The City’s Active Transportation Plan calls for creating pedestrian safety studies for up to 25 pedestrian areas in Rochester. The map below shows where the City would like to focus this effort.

Each safety study will analyze the area's intersections and sidewalks and identify ways to make them safer for pedestrians and more accessible for children, transit riders, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The pedestrian safety studies will also include engineering designs for key safety improvements identified during the project. These designs will then be used in upcoming projects to build out the improvements.
