In a soccer game one play can make a difference in the outcome. A defender sees an opening and makes a crucial stop. Protecting children works the same.

Mandated reporters are often the first line of defense for children experiencing abuse or neglect. Teachers, counselors, social workers, medical professionals, childcare providers, and others are uniquely positioned to recognize concerns and take action when something doesn't seem right.

Players don't wait for the final whistle to act, mandated reporters responsibility is to recognize concerns and help connect children to safety and support.

At the World Cup, teams rely on their coaches to navigate the game and tournament so that they have the best outcome. Children rely on safe adults and coaches for the same thing.

Safe coaches maintain appropriate boundaries, create inclusive environments, follow youth protection policies, encourage open communication, model respectful behavior. Safe adults help children be confident, recognize red flags, and make safe choices

The impact of a coach or safe adult extends far beyond a win or loss.

During the World Cup, fans watch from the sidelines. When it comes to child abuse, children can't afford us to stay on the sidelines. If you are a safe adult for a child and they disclose, stay calm, listen to the child, believe the child, avoid asking questions and report concerns to authorities.

By reporting and not investigating, you are helping the child more. To report call the NYS child abuse hotline 1-800-342-3720, if a child is in immediate danger call 911.

If you have any questions call The CAC 585-935-7827 or email [email protected]

During the FIFA World Cup you will see the defenders are trained to recognize threats before they become goals. Child abuse prevention starts the same way.

💙Spot the signs of child abuse to help protect children.
💙Unexplained injuries
💙Changes in behavior
💙Returning to earlier behavior
💙Fear of going home or to other places they would normally frequent
💙Changes in eating, sleeping or school performance
💙Lack of personal hygiene
💙Inappropriate sexual behaviors

These are some indicators of child abuse. It is important to note that a child displaying these behaviors may not have been abused, and not all children who have been abused show signs. - Source New York State Children's Alliance

As countries from around the world come together for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, were reminded that every successful team depends on safe and supportive people looking out for one another. At The CAC children rely on our team and their safe adults to keep them safe from abuse every day.

A child's team may include parents, teachers, coaches, neighbors, family members, and community organizations. When we work together, children are better protected from abuse and neglect.

The CAC wants to give a huge shoutout to the Pirate Toy Fund!

As one of our valued community partners, they are always there when our children and families need a little extra joy. Just recently, they helped with a special toy request, ensuring a kiddo received something they had been hoping for.

The Pirate Toy Fund always answers the call, helping us bring comfort, smiles, and moments of happiness to kiddos and families during difficult times.

It takes a community to support the children and families we serve, and we couldn't do it without organizations like the Pirate Toy Fund.

Thank you for helping make a difference!
