Thank you Marion Fire / EMS for the opportunity to set a table up at their open house. The Explorers had a blast demonstrating to all of the kids how firefighters put on their gear.

Class 09 had officially begun!! Congratulations to our newly promoted explorer officers who received their helmet fronts this evening. All new explorers received their gear, water bottles, and tags.

Newly promoted officers:
-Explorer Captain Kenzie Azzara
-Explorer Captain Dylan Connell
-Explorer Lieutenant Dylan Zander
-Explorer Lieutenant Alex Doran

They’ve also been split into companies, each under the leadership of a Captain and a Lieutenant responsible for their explorers.

CLASS 09 OFFICIALLY BEGINS TUESDAY OCTOBER 7th!

Our program is for youths between the ages of 14-18 who are enrolled in high school and have a interest in becoming a firefighter, EMT, or paramedic.

Post 343 is hosted by the Mattapoisett, Marion, and Rochester Fire Department’s.

Recently we held our promotional examination to fill a vacant Captains and 1 Lieutenant positions moving into Class 09.
Seven explorers tested for the positions. The testing was comprised of the following:

- 50 question written exam based off the IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting book and Student Manual
- Oral interview with three professionals not involved in the program.
- 4 physical skills testing based off Mass. Fire Academy Standards.

Last night Explorers completed an SCBA (firefighting breathing apparatus) confidence course. Everone took this head on; most as their first time experiencing this drill! Discussion was had regarding the dos and don’t of safety as it relates to air management, working time, and when to start backing out of a working assignment due to low air. Explorers were assigned a series of tough physical tasks to simulate working time in a fire. Once their low air alarm sounded they started to ‘exit the fire’ using the long lug out method. Once completed they rested, continuing to draw air from their pack until their bottle ran out and the mask sucked to their face. This was to both show them how much air they actually had left, what sounds and alarms the equipment makes, and relying on their training to remain calm. Great job everyone!

We are deeply saddened to share that Boston MedFlight has lost a dear friend and colleague. Justin Powers passed away unexpectedly on December 24, 2024. Jennifer Powers, Justin’s wife and our fellow colleague here at Boston MedFlight, shared “Justin has tragically lost his battle with PTSD.”

Justin joined us initially in 2019 as an EMT. He was most recently a member of our education staff, primarily working in our Simulation Lab to help educate and train clinical team members.

He was also a member of the Army National Guard and a firefighter and paramedic for the Avon Fire Department. Justin recently returned to Boston MedFlight after a deployment with his Army National Guard Unit.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Jen, Justin’s family, friends and colleagues.
