After a comfortable final weekend of June, heat and humidity will build across WNY with heat index values running in the 80℉ to near 100℉ Tuesday through Friday.

By taking some precautions and being smart will help. Be sure to drink plenty of water, seek cool shelter, and limit time spent outdoors to avoid heat related illness.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your A/C will get a bit of a workout…..

Heat Index Effects on the Body - It's not the heat, it's the humidity". Avoid extended periods of time in the heat, drink plenty of fluids, and familiarize yourself with the symptoms and treatments for these conditions.

Caution (80℉ - 90℉): Fatigue and decreased productivity with prolonged exposure to extreme heat or physical activity can increase the body’s risk of fatigue.

Health Caution (90℉ - 104℉): Once the heat index exceeds 90 degrees, heat-related illnesses such as cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke become possible from extended exposure to extreme heat, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the very young, the elderly, people who are pregnant, individuals with certain medical conditions, and those who are taking certain medications. Care should be taken to drink plenty of fluids, avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and wear light, breathable clothing.

Danger (100℉ - 129℉): When the heat index exceeds 100 degrees, early-stage heat-related illnesses such as cramps and heat exhaustion go from being possible to likely for anyone who is exposed to heat for a prolonged period of time. The risk of heat stroke also increases, particularly for high-risk groups (young children, elderly, pregnant, and some chronically ill individuals).

Extreme Danger (>130℉): Heat stroke is likely to occur for any individual exposed to these temperatures for a prolonged period of time, and care must be taken to avoid any extended amount of time in this level of heat. Stay indoors as much as possible, drink plenty of fluids, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing to cover your body from direct exposure to the sun, which will only worsen the effects of heat.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the greater Rochester area today from Noon until 8PM.
Consider postponing or rescheduling outdoor activities, especially during the heat of the day.

If you must be outside, be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade.

During extremely hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged. When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperatures rise and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness.

It is important to know the symptoms of extreme heat exposure, the appropriate responses, and when to call 911 for help!
