The largest mass ex*****on in United States history happened the day after Christmas. Thirty eight Dakota men were hanged together on one scaffold in Mankato, Minnesota, in front of a crowd of thousands.

The war that led to it began over food. Payments promised by treaty had not arrived at the agencies on the Minnesota River, traders had stopped extending credit, and Dakota families watched their children go hungry while warehouses stood full. The fighting in the summer of 1862 lasted about six weeks.

Afterward a military commission tried more than three hundred Dakota men. Some of the trials took only minutes. Three hundred and three were sentenced to death. President Lincoln reviewed the records himself and cut the list to thirty nine. One more was reprieved. The remaining thirty eight were hanged on December 26, 1862.

Every December, riders leave the Lower Brule reservation in South Dakota and cross about three hundred and thirty miles of winter country on horseback to reach Mankato on the twenty sixth. Runners come from Fort Snelling to meet them. They read the names out loud. 🕯️

This is Hawk! My current book, "Into the Deep", a sequel to "Out of the Woods" is now in the hands of my publisher, Hangar 1 Publishing, and the contract has been signed. In an exciting turn of events, my editor asked me to come up with some interview questions. I will be interviewed on camera and my responses will appear throughout the book via QR Codes or something similar. Click on it and you will see my brief interview about that particular question. How exciting! I will need to spend some significant time with these questions, because they are things that truly challenge me. My work on each of them will take me deeper. And after all, isn't that the ultimate goal?

Did you know? The Restoration House was built in 1856 as a single-family residence. But from 1865-1871, it was rented by Dodge County and served as courthouse offices while the courthouse was being built. To accommodate detainees, a jail cell was constructed in the basement of the house.

Take a tour of the Restoration House and old jail cell on Saturdays or Sundays from noon-4 p.m. Private tours also available by appointment - call 507-635-5104.
