The fourth year of a controlled archery hunt in select Rochester parks will continue the city’s deer management effort.

The hunt will be held throughout the state’s bowhunting season, which runs from Sept. 13 to Dec. 31, 2025.

Rochester Parks and Recreation Department is again coordinating the hunt.

Parks and trails will remain open during hunting season, with some areas being designated as off-limits in 10 select parks. They are Bear Creek, Essex Park, Foster Arend Park, Gamehaven Reservoir, Hadley Creek Golf Course, Indian Heights Park, Northern Heights Park, Riverview West Park, Willow Creek Reservoir and Zumbro South.

Signs will mark where hunting is occurring.

Hunters are required to successfully complete Minnesota Bowhunter Education and pass the Minnesota bowhunter proficiency test. They are also expected to comply with all Minnesota Department of Natural Resources deer hunting rules and

Bowhunting for deer is typically done from a tree stand, which is a platform attached to a tree 10 to 20 feet above the ground. Being elevated improves the hunter’s ability to detect deer, reduces the likelihood that deer will detect the hunter and most importantly, establishes a downward shot trajectory so that arrows never travel far from the shooter’s location

While picking up litter in the park this morning I came upon this man taking two large bags of his household garbage out of his car and throwing it in the Harter’s garbage can at the park entrance. I explained to him that the park’s garbage can it not for people to use for their personal household trash, that it is available for people who use the park for recreational activities. I further explained that the park’s trash bin is provided privately by the our neighborhood association. He became quite angry, called a Karen and told me to mind my own business. He said there’s no signage saying he can’t dump his garbage there. I guess we’ll have to post some sort of a sign to that effect. Any ideas on the wording? Please let me know your suggestions. Also if you see this guy dumping his household trash in the park’s trash bin again, please let me know.
Thanks,
Barb Hudson, president of Friends of Indian Heights.
