REFLECT... REMEMBER... HONOR...
by Christopher Martin, Public Information Officer, Brockport Fire District

REFLECT... REMEMBER... HONOR...

The fallen heroes of SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 and those we have lost as a result of their efforts in the aftermath of those attacks.

REFLECT... REMEMBER... HONOR...
The almost three thousand lives that were lost that fateful day.

Please join us this Friday on the 11th whenever your schedule allows...

As the 25th Anniversary of the attacks of 9/11/01 approaches, your community volunteers are hard at work preparing to host our annual day long Vigil at the 9/11 Memorial Monument at Station #4 - 237 South Main Street in Brockport.

The bunting is up, new signs for the front of the building have been made and hung, the grass is cut, the small American flags will be placed around the memorial and the 343 "tags of remembrance" are laid out ready for the participants to "adopt".

We will start the day with an opening ceremony at 8:30. The SUNY Brockport Army ROTC unit will lower the American flag, replace the worn flag as part of the ceremony and set the new flag to half-staff in accordance with Presidential orders.

The memorial bell will be rung in the Fire Department of New York's (FDNY) tradition 5-5-5-5 signifying the loss of a firefighter at the time of the first strike, and the uniformed honor guard will take their place around the memorial from the close of the opening ceremony until the closing ceremony.

The participants in the honor guard; Police Officers, Firefighters, EMS personnel, members of the Military and community volunteers are asked to choose one of the "tags of remembrance" with a firefighter's photo and name on it before they take their place on the engraved walkway surrounding the memorial. Once they have been relieved, they ring the memorial bell as they leave the memorial for "their firefighter" and say his name.

The closing ceremony will begin at 6:30 PM, honor the fallen and offer words of reflection and remembrance in keeping with the theme of the day. The flag will be raised back to full staff as the sun sets over the horizon. We will close the Vigil as we have every year since the attacks in the tradition of the department with the playing of Taps.

The community is welcome and encouraged to join us. We ask that you do!
