Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. 🧡

Every year, I will honor and share this piece of my heart. In 2007, I lost my cousin Ronnie to an accidental overdose. Seventeen years later, the memory of him and the pain we felt when he left remains as vivid as ever. In 2019, his sister, Bobbie, passed away after years of struggling with addiction. Her pain ran deep, and like Ronnie, it didn’t begin with that first use. Their battles were shaped by years of prescribed poly-substances, poverty, abuse, loss, and mental health struggles. They lived in a world with little education, minimal support, overwhelming stigma and shame, and the harsh realities of the war on drugs, which too often prioritizes incarceration over treatment and care. A world with deadly policies, a tainted drug market, and a flawed medical system.

We need to focus on what truly works—policies rooted in LOVE, COMPASSION, and SUPPORT, not punishment. We must END THE STIGMA AND SHAME. Support harm reduction organizations, practices, and policies. OVERDOSE AND DRUG-RELATED DEATHS ARE PREVENTABLE. We are still hurting, and we will always remember. Through that remembrance, THERE WILL BE CHANGE.

No matter your journey, please don’t give up. There is hope. Let their lives not be lost in vain. We’ve lost too many already. Keep fighting. 🧡 We are here. We love you. You are worthy. I promise.

Bobbie and Ronnie were one of a kind, irreplaceable. They were jokesters, the embodiment of compassion, even when they didn’t receive the same in return. They were a light amid the darkness and pain they so deeply felt. I love them both dearly and always will. I will never stop fighting in their honor. They are missed more than words can express and will be until we are reunited one day. 🧡🦋

Join us in collaboration with New York Psilocybin Action Committee / New Yorkers for Mental Health Alternatives (NYMHA) for their next meeting!

On Tuesday, September 10th at 7 pm, We will be joined by guest speaker Assembly member Amy Paulin (D-district 88) Chair of NYS Health Committee and sponsor of NY bill A10375. NYMHA is looking for groups across New York to host watch parties to participate in viewing the meeting as well as looking for questions / talking points to send to Amy Paulin ahead of time so she can be prepared to discuss.

Here is the bill:
https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2023/A10375

The bill creates a permit style system for psilocybin access. Permit holders have to take an educational course, pass a test about their understanding, then they can legally grow, possess, purchase, and consume (not near a school, or certain other institutions.) It also creates provisions for cultivator licenses with distribution. It also creates regulation and training of facilitators of various levels.

We hope to see you on the call if you are able to attend. Are you able to host a watch party? DO you know a place to host a watch party? Do you have ideas for questions/talking points for the meeting? Please let us know if so!
