Have you got a case of Space Fever?! Keep the sky gazing going and try to see a comet! ☄️

In 6 days, if you step outside before sunrise and look northeast, you should be able to see a comet with the naked eye for the first time in years.

Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) has been approaching for months. Right now it requires binoculars. But in 6 days, everything changes at once.

April 17 is New Moon — the darkest pre-dawn sky of the entire month. No lunar interference. On that same night, the comet crosses magnitude 3, crossing the threshold for naked eye visibility under dark skies. The combination of peak darkness and peak brightness arrives on the same night.

Here is exactly what to do:

Set an alarm for 90 minutes before sunrise on April 17. Step outside and let your eyes adjust for at least 10 minutes. Face northeast. Find the Great Square of Pegasus low on the horizon — four stars forming a rough square. The comet will be nearby as a faint smudge with a short tail. It will not look like a star. It will look soft, slightly elongated, and faintly glowing.

You do not need a telescope. You do not need binoculars — though they will help. You need a dark location, 10 minutes of patience, and a clear horizon to the northeast.

April 17 is the beginning of the window. April 18 and 19 are the peak. After April 19, the comet moves into the evening sky and forward scattering may make it dramatically brighter — or it may not survive perihelion at all.

But April 17 is when you first see it with your own eyes.

Save this. Set your alarm. 6 days.
