The County is offering FREE Lead Training. The Renovation, Repair and Painting rule (RRP) affects anyone who is paid to perform work that disturbs paint in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This includes residential rental property owners/managers, general contractors, maintenance personnel and trade contractors including: HVAC, painters, plumbers, carpenters, and electricians.

The Monroe County Department of Public Health is sponsoring free lead training! All classes are being provided by Environmental Education Associates (EEA)

We were excited to welcome Dr. Paul Allwood and Quanza Griffin from the CDC’s Lead Poisoning Prevention & Surveillance Branch to Rochester!

They met with the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning and our team to learn more about our work to protect kids and families from lead exposure. We also had fun sharing a little of Rochester’s history and what makes our community special.

And just like that, we wrapped up our 3rd Annual Meeting of the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning! 🎉

We’re especially excited to welcome three new members to CPLP! It was such a great opportunity to come together, celebrate the progress and impact we’ve made over the past year, and talk about what’s ahead.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come and even more excited about what’s next. Here’s to another year of collaboration, learning, and working together to prevent lead poisoning in our communities! 💙

This month, the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning hosted our second Healthy Pots, Healthy Homes event at the Butenese Cultural Center, in partnership with County Legislator Yversha Roman, Legislator Marvin Stepherson, and Legislator Dr. Nazish Jeffery.

More than 50 families joined us to explore the potential health risks associated with lead and other harmful substances found in some cookware. They also learned practical ways to choose safer options for their families.

This cookware exchange was inspired by conversations with community members who shared their questions and concerns about the products we use every day. It has been incredibly meaningful to turn those conversations into action.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this gathering such a success. Let’s continue bringing this important conversation into our community! ✨

Join us for a FREE virtual Lunch & Learn on Monday, July 20, from 12:00–1:00 PM to learn about tenant rights related to lead exposure.

Attorney A.J. Durwin, Managing Attorney of Tenant Advocacy at Empire Justice Center, will discuss:

• How tenants can help prevent lead exposure
• What to do if you or a family member has been exposed
• The warranty of habitability and your legal rights
• How to enforce those rights and the remedies available if they have been violated

In June, the CDC hosted the Lead-Free Communities Summit at its Chamblee Campus.

It was inspiring to hear about the meaningful work our fellow grantees are doing to create healthier, lead-safe communities across the country. We were especially grateful for the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Allwood and Quanza Brooks Wilson of the CDC’s Lead Poisoning Prevention & Surveillance Branch and to learn more about the shared commitment to preventing lead exposure.

Together, we’re strengthening partnerships and advancing the work to create healthier, lead-safe communities for all.
