Please Help Save the Dam at Silver Lake

Rochester City leaders are proposing to spend $22 million State and City tax dollars for work on Silver Lake Park. Many of the proposed projects under the request will certainly enhance Silver Lake Park as the ‘Jewel’ of the Park system for thousands of Rochester residents and visitors to Rochester. However, the Friends of Silver Lake, and many other City r

esidents who have learned about the proposal, are opposed to one part, the removal of the existing dam adjacent to Broadway, only to be replaced with a sheet-pile diaphragm structure. This will take away more than 700 feet, or almost one third of the Lake created in the early 1930’s for recreation. While the City has touted removal of the dam as being a plus for Silver Lake Park, many of their reasons for doing so are misleading and not based in fact. The information on this page spells out why the Friends of Silver Lake believe removal of the Dam will not be beneficial to the Park, and we ask for your support to help convince our local and state leaders to not fund this portion of the project. To help stop this misguided effort to remove the dam, please like us on Facebook, share this page, and take time to contact your State and City leaders (contact info on this page). We hope you might find time to read and understand more fully why we don’t support removal of the dam and reduction in the size of Silver Lake.
