Rochester Umoja Karamu Umoja Karamu is a ritual for the Black family that was developed to create new meaning and solidarity through ceremony and symbolism.

Umoja Karamu (meaning, “unity feast”) was established in 1971 as a Black cultural celebration acknowledged during the fourth Sunday in November; often regarded as “the other Thanksgiving.” It is a ritual for the Black Family to create new meaning and solidarity through ceremony and symbolism. Since 2020, Rochester Umoja Karamu has given away hundreds of dinner boxes to the Greater Rochester commun

ity to learn about and celebrate the unity feast. Umoja Karamu dinner boxes include whole chickens, fresh collard greens, fresh squash, fresh sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, black-eyed peas, and rice. Each dinner box is built to feed a family of four. All foods are emblematic of people of African descent’s unity, strength, struggle, and liberation; and the unity dinner offers an opportunity to authentically celebrate our legacies.

Umoja Karamu is a cultural unity celebration that not only provides fresh produce but also opportunities to celebrate the unity, strength, struggle, and liberation of people of African descent.

We're gearing up for a great celebration, Umoja Karamu! This celebration honors the five periods of African American/Black life.

Come and collect your cultural food box to take part in the celebration. The distribution will officially begin at 2pm, and the boxes will last as long as supplies remain. Given the socio-political climate, we will offer one box per vehicle or non-vehicle participant. Thank you for your cooperation!

Please use Lincoln Avenue and Farragut Street to enter Fessenden Street! This will assist with traffic flow!
