Jeff, the owner of a thriving ACE Hardware store, lost his vision as a teenager. His journey with Leader Dog began two years ago when Jeff decided it was time to strengthen his long white cane skills and reached out to Leader Dogs for the Blind.

“I fell in love with the organization that week,” Jeff recalls after completing our Orientation and Mobility program. “After that week, I knew I really wanted to have a Leader Dog.”

Jeff later returned to campus and was paired with Leader Dog Audie. Today, traveling independently has become much easier with Audie by his side.

This month, we proudly celebrated an extraordinary milestone - 40 years of service from Dr. David Smith!

For four decades, Dr. Smith’s dedication to canine health and well-being has been integral to our mission. As the longest-tenured guide dog veterinarian in the United States, his depth of knowledge and steady leadership have helped ensure exceptional care for countless dogs, ultimately supporting thousands of people in gaining independence and partnership.

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Smith has been a mentor, teacher, and trusted colleague. His commitment to compassion, excellence, and lifelong learning has shaped our standards of care and strengthened our organization in ways that will be felt for generations to come.

Thank you, Dr. Smith, for 40 years of unwavering service and impact!

While living with puppy raisers and breeding host volunteers, Future Leader Dogs learn basic cues and discipline. Everyone in the household works together to set the puppies up for success as Leader Dogs and teach perseverance and patience.

With a volunteer's support, our Future Leader Dogs prepare to partner with someone who is blind or low vision to take on the world in a safe and independent way!

Leader Dog Graduate Cheryl knows the importance of vocational skills for those who are blind or low vision. She works in her community to create virtual life skills programming for those in the low vision community.

"When I go out, I'm a lot more open to exploring than I ever was before," said Cheryl after her time at Leader Dog. "I walk a lot more. The cane tip doesn't jab me in the stomach, and I have more control over it. I can set my own pace."
