In Vargem Bonita, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, workers cutting a pine tree discovered a natural formation inside the wood that bore a striking resemblance to Our Lady of Aparecida, the Patroness of Brazil.

The discovery was made on October 9, only days before her national feast on October 12. João Paulo do Carmo Esteves was cutting the timber beside his father when he noticed the unusual shape appearing across two knots in the wood. The family, deeply devoted to Our Lady, was overwhelmed when they saw the crowned figure and mantle-like outline hidden within the trunk.

The owner of the wood photographed the discovery immediately and reportedly intends to preserve the section of the trunk in a small grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. The family received it as a powerful sign of consolation, faith and protection.

The formation occurred naturally and has not been declared a miracle by the Church. Yet throughout Christian history, ordinary parts of creation have often turned the heart toward something greater. For those who witnessed it, an ordinary tree unexpectedly became a reminder of the Mother of Christ.

Hidden within the wood, the image seemed to proclaim the same message that has united Brazilian Catholics for centuries:

Our Lady of Aparecida, pray for Brazil. 🇧🇷🌳🌹✝️

More than sixteen centuries ago, Christians were already turning to the Blessed Virgin Mary in prayer and seeking her intercession during times of danger.
Preserved on an Egyptian fragment known as Rylands Greek Papyrus 470, the Sub Tuum Praesidium invokes Mary as Theotokos—Mother of God:

“Beneath your compassion we take refuge, O Theotokos. Do not despise our petitions in time of trouble, but deliver us from dangers.”

The papyrus is generally dated by the John Rylands Library to the third or fourth century, making it the oldest surviving written witness to this ancient Marian prayer. Its exact dating remains debated, so “early third century” is more precise than the evidence currently allows.

Long before the medieval period, Christians were already honouring Mary as the Mother of God and asking for her prayers. The devotion Catholics continue today was deeply rooted in the life of the ancient Church ✝️
