On behalf of the Chris Ruiz Foundation sends condolences to the family of Herbert Ward Jr. we have been working on ways to change the laws for life jacket uses. This loss angers me because had we talked more about this maybe something would have been done. I have spoken with Paulette Guajardo about ideas but was never followed up with. I have asked to go on tv and radios about water safety and what we can do and what we are trying to do. No one wants to listen. How about now? Is it ok to now talk about changing the laws for life jackets? This is another incident that will be just another statistic to the state. However these people are not statistics they are our people!

We created this petition to ask for your support. Life jacket laws need to be changed. Boating deaths due to no life jacket use has increased and we fear without this support the numbers will just keep increasing. I am always surprised when I hear people say “it is the law for them to wear a life jacket”. They are shocked to hear that it in fact is not a law. Help us send this petition to state and get this change made. This costs ZERO dollars to sign but the impact could be so great.

If you want change you need to make what you want changed known. January is right around the corner. State Rep Denise Villalobos will be filing for HB 2084 in Texas to be changed. This petition will just give her an added tool to make this change more successful.

This September, we’re bringing a new kind of water safety conversation to the Coastal Bend—one that doesn’t end when summer does.

September 14–20, 2026, Safe & Strong Swim Academy will launch Fall Into Water Safety: Coastal Bend Water Safety Celebration Week—bringing together local businesses, families, advocates, and community partners to keep water safety education and awareness at the forefront all year long.

Here in the Coastal Bend, water is part of the way we live. Our children grow up around pools, lakes, beaches, bays, and the coast we call home. Keeping them safer around water deserves to be a year-round conversation.

Throughout Celebration Week, we’ll educate, raise awareness, share experiences, and help expand access to survival swim instruction for local children.

We want you to be part of it, too.

I saw this story this morning and was just in awwww. I approached Mayor Paulette Guajardo about doing something like this for our Corpus Christi residents last year. Her concerns were very surprising. It was not how we could make this successful or how we can help our neighboring community and visitors. It was about people not understanding the importance of returning the life jackets. As much as I pushed that we educate and people will follow but yes the fact that they could be taken was there. However that is why we work to have backups. Then the response was more shocking. Let’s just say she was going to get me in touch with someone from the island area because those are the people that need it. I really wish and really am interested in working with someone to bring these to our local beaches. Just seems like providing added tools to save lives is just not of importance.

Police in Surfside Beach are taking new steps to keep families safe in the water, nearly two months after an 11-year-old from Richmond drowned there.
