A big thank you to Genna VanVarden with The Little Tree Project and Sgt. Chris Horton with Monroe County Sheriff's Office for attending our quarterly Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) meeting and sharing important updates on recent human trafficking operations in our area.

It’s only through a strong, coordinated response to the crimes we face that we can better protect survivors and work toward legislative change.

Their abuser may prevent them from going to work, harass them while at work, or may limit them to cash or transportation. Last week the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ACADV), in partnership with The Lighthouse , had the opportunity to provide an engaging domestic violence training for Coastal Family Partners.

We kicked off the training with *In Her Shoes*, an interactive simulation that allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the difficult decisions and barriers survivors often face.

Throughout the day, we explored the dynamics of domestic violence, power and control, survivor-centered support, and the importance of a strong community response. Amanda from The Lighthouse also led an important discussion on "The Experience and Effects of Domestic Violence on Children".

Members of our Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response Team met at the end of last week and participated in the “In Her Shoes” activity, a powerful exercise that asks participants to step into the experiences of a domestic violence survivor. By navigating the same barriers, emotions, and consequences survivors often face, team members gained a deeper understanding of the realities of abuse and the importance of trauma‑informed support.

This activity strengthened our shared commitment to advocating for victims and survivors and to working together to build a safer, more responsive community.

Many domestic violence victims have been forced to stay with their abusers longer for economic reasons. Keeping victims financially dependent and trapped is a common tactic used by abusers, and this is unacceptable.
