With the start of a new season, comes new 4H projects! With help from our Prostaffer, Kelsey Pfeiffer, we created a Top 8 list to help you bring home your new sheep or goat project!
1. A shelter
Your new sheep or goat will need a dry area to protect them from the weather. A basic shelter such as a three-sided shed or pole barn that is large enough to get them out of the rain and wind would work perfectly.
2. Strong Fencing
When building a fence, make sure to look for gaps. Sheep and goats (and even pigs!) are notorious for pushing through the smallest spaces.
3. Water
Access to fresh, clean water is essential for your animal. It’s best to have the water source off the ground or tall enough so the animals cannot p*e or p**p in it. It’s important to refresh your animal’s water daily.
4. Blanket
If your sheep or goat is coming home sheared, then we suggest making sure you have a blanket that will properly fit. Not sure which blanket to use? Keep an eye out for tomorrows post for more information!
5. Halter
Our ProStaffer, Kelsey Pfeiffer, suggests a training halter such as our Nylon halter to help halter break your sheep or goat. Now is the easiest time to halter break your animal!
6. Feed/Feed pan
Our ProStaffer, Kelsey Pfeiffer, suggests a feeder that hooks onto your pen. Make sure it’s low enough that your animal can reach it but high enough for you to reach. Before bringing your animal home, you should have a feed routine planed. If you are unsure where to start, it’s best to talk with the person you’re buying your animal from.
7. Grooming Supplies
A basic brush, shampoo, and conditioner is a great start for your daily care routine. Keep an eye out in the next few weeks for what we would suggest!
8. Management Plan
Utilizing a white board or notebook is key to keeping track of your project throughout the show season. Using this help manage their weight and schedule!
