I never imagined that asking for help would become part of my routine. After working my whole life, raising my children, and doing my best to stay independent, it’s hard to admit that sometimes the bills just don’t stretch far enough anymore.
My Social Security check covers the basics most months, but when the power bill goes up, or my medications cost more than expected, something has to wait. Sometimes that “something” is groceries.
What I didn’t expect was how much kindness could change things. The first time I reached out for help, I was embarrassed. I thought people might judge me for needing assistance at my age. Instead, I was met with compassion, respect, and people who treated me like family.
Because of the support I received, I’ve been able to keep food in my pantry, stay connected to important services, and feel a little less alone. More than anything, it reminded me that needing help doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re human.
There are so many seniors like me quietly struggling behind closed doors. Many of us spent our lives taking care of others and never imagined we’d someday need someone to help take care of us.
If this story sounds like you or someone you know, please know you are not alone. We at FPCI are here to assist you. Call us at (828)346-6131 to learn more about available services and support.
A little kindness goes a long way. Sometimes it means more than people will ever know.
