"We have all the light we need, we just need to put it in practice."

-Brother Albert Pike

Happy New Years, Brothers, Family and Friends of Woodbury Lodge No. 539.

"For Charity is neither Christian nor Jewish, nor Chinese nor Buddhistic. And celebrations which create joy in little hearts and feed the hungry and make the poor think that Masons do not forget the lessons in lodge, are not Christian alone, though they be held at Christmas, and are not for Christians alone, though the celebration be in His honor. Recall the ritual: 'By the exercise of brotherly love we are taught to regard the whole human species as one family, the high and low, the rich and poor, who, as created by one Almighty Parent, and inhabitants of the same planet, are to aid, support and protect each other'.

"It is with this thought that we, as Masons, celebrate Christmas, to bring joy to our brethren and their little ones, and truly observe the brotherhood of man and the Fatherhood of God, whether we be Jew or Gentile, Mohammedan or Buddhist."

“Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

– First President of the United States and Freemason, George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

“Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country's cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause.”

― Abraham Lincoln

Traditionally, Masonic Lodges pause to recognize their own who are Veterans in November. We Brothers of Woodbury Lodge No. 539 would like to formally recognize our irreplaceable Veterans of the Lodge, of Freemasonry and the community at large.

They were our brother and sisters, father and mothers, uncles and aunts, grandfathers, and grandmothers. They were from down the street, across town, from the holler, the mountains across the country, territories, cities, ‘burgs, townships, parish, and some from other countries who wanted to earn their citizenship to this country. Some were drafted, some volunteered. For some it was their only choice, others it was their best choice. Some were the first in their family, others it was a family legacy. They died on a hill, a trench, an island, a desert, a mountain, a rice patty, a foxhole, a hedgerow, a jungle, on the high seas, on brown water, below the ocean’s depths, in the air and the edge of space. They died in a skirmish, a charge, a battle, a hot war, a cold war, a police action a war to end all wars, a war on terrorism, communism and some in silent operations that will never see the light of day. They were Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Coastguardsmen and Merchant Marines. They died knowing it was one-way mission. They died not knowing it was coming.

They died for our collective freedom. They died with the hope that no more should have to pay the price.

Be worthy of the price they paid.

Woodbury Lodge No. 539 takes somber pause to note the service of our fallen and to note the Brothers who never made it back.

"I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth - that God Governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?"

-Brother Benjamin Franklin

At one time our Square and Compass on the back of the Lodge were visible from the highway. Over time, trees grew thick and have obscured the view. With such a beautiful day for the end of the year, we thought to share these images and hope that all see a brighter tomorrow dawn with the new year.

We also want to thank the Brothers and friends responsible for servicing the Square and Compass, as well as the Lodge grounds and building for the outstanding task they have performed over the year.
