Roanoke Valley Elite (RVE) is a USATF sponsored track club located in the greater Roanoke area that was founded to support elite and age group elite middle-distance and distance athletes with the opportunity to continue to run and race at a high level.

America's Toughest Road Races took place yesterday in Roanoke at the Blue Ridge Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K. RVE was represented in the half marathon, which has 1897 feet of elevation gain and 3790 total feet of elevation change.

Joseph Darwin led the way by claiming the overall win in the half marathon in a new course record time of 1:18:38, breaking the old course record of 1:21:57 by over 3 minutes. Joseph also holds the course record in the marathon of 2:44:02, which he set in 2024.

Just a few minutes later, George Tolton crossed the line in a time of 1:23:15 to claim 3rd overall and a podium finish. There were a total of 857 finishers in the half marathon distance.

RVE athletes were in action near and far this past weekend, competing in a variety of distances. After breaking his foot this past fall, David Angell made his return to racing at the Shamrock 8K in Virginia Beach. He showed no signs of rust, finishing seventh overall and winning the Masters title in a time of 26:27. That time age grades to 23:36 and scores an 88.6% on the age grade scale (90% is considered World Class). Closer to home, Allison Bowersock took the overall win (male and female) in the Backpack Run 10k at Green Hill Park, completing the course in 45:16. Finally, Nate Michener returned to the Tough Cookie 5k on the Greenfield XC course in Daleville where he took the victory last year. In spite of improving on last year’s time significantly by running a 19:47, Nate was edged out for the win but nabbed the runner up spot on the tough course. This morning the 19th annual Trail Nut Half Marathon and 10K were held in Bedford, VA. In the Half Marathon, Andrew Parkins took control of the race and cruised to an over 3 minute victory in a time of 1:29:22. In the 10K, Nate Michener had a closer race and ran in 2nd for most of the way before taking the lead and securing the win in a time of 46:13. Congrats to both RVE runners on their victories!

RVE’s Allison Bowersock headed to Columbus, OH, this past weekend for the Arnold Pump and Run 5k. This unique event has participants bench press a percentage of their body weight up to a max of 30 times then run a 5k. For each bench rep, 30 seconds is deducted from the 5k time to calculate the final finishing time. Based on her age and weight, Bowersock was assigned a bench press weight of 90 lbs. For the first time ever, she was able to max out her bench press, completing all 30 reps. She then hit the roads for the 5k and completed that in an outstanding 20:56, achieving both her goals of maxing out the bench press and completing the 5k in under 21 min. Her adjusted time was 5:56, which placed second overall female and 26th out of the 1,083 total participants. RVE athletes took to the trails on Saturday for the annual running of the Frozen Toe 10k. While the weather may not have aligned with the race’s name, conditions weren’t exactly nice, as rain created soggy, slick conditions. Jacob Coccia led the way, both for RVE and the race itself, taking the overall win with a time of 39:11. On the women’s side, Anna Battiata also gabbed the win, crossing the line in 45:39, almost 6 min ahead of 2nd place. Jared Coccia also nabbed a podium place, finishing 3rd overall in 39:50, and Andrew Parkins took the Masters win and 4th overall with a time of 40:02. Nate Michener rounded things out for RVE, finishing 7th overall and 3rd in the highly competitive 30-34 AG in 41:42. A quartet of RVE athletes took part in the annual Drumstick Dash 5k in Roanoke on Thanksgiving morning, with all four finishing in the top-12 in the always competitive race. Leading the way for RVE was Joe Darwin, who finished 2nd overall and dipped under 16 minutes with a time of 15:53. Next across the line for RVE was George Tolton, who finished 8th overall and 3rd in the 30-34 age group in 16:51. He was followed closely by Andrew Parkins, who finished 10th overall and secured the Masters title with a time of 16:55. Rounding things out was Bryan Swann with a 12th place finish and the win in the 35-39 age group in 17:15. RVE’s Nate Michener picked up the win at the Star City 10k in Roanoke this morning. After a good battle throughout the race, Michener emerged victorious by 13 seconds, crossing the line with a time of 35:28. RVE was in Richmond yesterday competing in the Richmond Half Marathon and 8k. Leading the way in the half marathon was George Tolton, who crossed the line 31st overall in the highly competitive event with a time of 1:14:16, good for 10th in the 30-34 age group. On the women’s side, Anna Battiata was 24th overall and 4th in the 35-39 age group with a new PR of 1:25:18. In the 8k event, Allison Bowersock kept the PR trend going by finishing 31st overall and 4th in the 40-44 age group with a time of 34:51. RVE’s Alice Kassens scored back-to-back wins in local 5ks the past two weekends, starting with the Run for Donuts in Salem last Sat. Racing through the hills of Sherwood Memorial Park, Kassens took the victory with a time of 22:15. Up next was yesterday’s equally hilly Kingdom Run 5k on the streets of Rocky Mount where Kassens secured the win with a time of 22:19. Three RVE athletes were in Lynchburg Saturday morning for the 51st running of the Virginia Ten Miler and 4+ Miler. Battling rainy conditions on the extremely hilly courses, Jacob Coccia led the way in the Ten Miler, finishing 24th overall and 3rd in the 25-29 AG with a time of 57:11. Jared Coccia wasn’t too far behind, finishing 33rd overall and 6th in the 25-29 AG in 58:55. In the shorter race, Nate Michener was the 4th overall finisher, winning the 30-34 AG in the process, with a time of 25:27.
