When City Manager Valmarie Turner presented her budget recommendations for FY (fiscal year) 2025-26, “challenges and choices” was the repeated motto of it.

Now at the start of the 2026-27 school year, our teachers and students have been forced into their own challenges and choices. Layoffs, cut or reduced programs, and loss of our activity buses.

Our city can’t afford to adequately fund our schools but extravagant office remodels are no problem?

We deserve a City Council that takes accountability and holds their employees accountable as well.

We. Deserve. Better.

This is a huge issue that RCC-PTA would like to see resolved. Our schools NEED activity buses for the entire school year. This is what decreased local funding causes.

There was also a program for students with truancy issues, (which consisted largely of students who spoke English as a second language, ELL) where they could attend after school tutoring or after school detention, and attending twice would erase a tardy. Without activity buses this will be discontinued because it won’t be equitable.
This will land more kids in truancy court, which for ELL kids specifically, will be an issue due to immigration status.
Vivian Sanchez-Jones Nick S. Hagen Terry McGuire Councilman Phazhon Nash Mayor Joe Cobb, what can you do to help resolve this? Roanoke City Public Schools need your support.
