Today we’re shining a light on one of the foundational pillars of our work: SARA Roanoke’s Volunteer Crisis Advocate Program!

When a survivor seeks medical care following acute trauma, having a compassionate, knowledgeable advocate by their side can transform an overwhelming moment into an empowering one. That is where our dedicated team of Volunteer Crisis Advocates (VCAs) comes in.

VCAs provide emergency hospital advocacy at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, offering immediate emotional support, explaining rights and options, and ensuring no survivor in the Roanoke Valley has to navigate a crisis alone.

✨ Interested in making a direct impact?

Our volunteers receive comprehensive, trauma-informed training covering crisis intervention, systems advocacy, and medical advocacy—no prior healthcare or legal background required!

Our next volunteer training cohort begins Tuesday, September 22nd. Spaces are limited, and applications are open now.

🍬 Help Us Bring a Little Comfort to Support Groups in Local Jails!

At SARA (Sexual Assault Response and Awareness), our outreach extends into local correctional facilities where we host dedicated support groups for incarcerated individuals. These groups offer a safe, non-judgmental space for healing, processing trauma, building coping skills, and finding community during an incredibly challenging time.

Something as simple as a piece of candy goes a long way in these sessions - it provides a moment of comfort, warmth, and humanity that participants rarely experience.

How You Can Help:

Donate Locally: Have unopened candy to drop off? Send an email to [email protected] to coordinate a donation!

Your support helps us show up for everyone in our community on their path to healing. Thank you for your generosity! 💙

You might hear us use the phrase "trauma-informed care" a lot, but what does it actually mean for a survivor connecting with our team?

It means we understand that trauma changes how the brain and body respond to stress. It means we don’t ask "Why did you do that?"Instead, our ecosystem of care focuses entirely on "How can we support you right now?"

In practice, our trauma-informed approach means:
🤝 Safety First: Creating environments and services where you feel secure, heard, and respected.
💡 Transparency: Making sure you understand all of your options clearly so there are no surprises.
✊ Empowerment: Recognizing that you are the expert on your own life and your own healing.

Every survivor deserves care that treats them with the utmost dignity. That is our promise to the Roanoke Valley.

Healing from sexual violence isn’t a straight line, and there is no "correct" way to navigate the aftermath of trauma. Some days feel like progress and other days feel like survival.

At SARA, we believe that true healing can only happen when you are in the driver's seat. That’s why our services are completely voluntary. We will never pressure you to report to law enforcement, take a specific path, or move faster than you are ready for.

You hold the wheel. We are just here to offer steady, confidential support along the way.

📞 Help is always available. The hotline is free, confidential, and open 24/7 at 540-981-9352. You don't have to navigate this alone.

Our hearts are so full today. 🧡

A couple of weeks ago, we shared a quiet but incredibly urgent need: our supply closet was completely out of new men’s underwear for survivors who have their clothing collected as evidence during hospital exams.

We asked for your help to restock our shelves, and the Roanoke Valley answered the call in a massive way.

Packages have been arriving at our office daily, completely filling our shelves with brand-new, comfortable undergarments. Because of your quick generosity, our advocates can head to the hospital knowing they have exactly what is needed to help a survivor leave with comfort, privacy, and dignity.

To everyone who purchased from our Amazon Wishlist, shared our post, or dropped off a donation: Thank you. ❤

You didn't just donate clothes; you showed up for a neighbor during one of the most vulnerable moments of their life. We are endlessly grateful to do this work in a community that cares so deeply.

We are officially restocked and ready to serve!
