Volunteer Spotlight
For the past two years, one of our faithful volunteers, a retired business owner, has served alongside The Least of These Ministry each week. Her willingness to step outside of her comfort zone and answer God's call has been a blessing not only to those we serve, but to our entire ministry family.
We recently asked her three questions, and we wanted to share her responses in her own words.
Why do you volunteer?
"God tells us in His word it’s clearly more blessed to give than to receive. I have felt led to volunteer with underserved for many years mostly with the special needs population and the elderly. But after retiring, God brought me to an area that was clearly outside my comfort zone. After much prayer, two years ago, I felt led to join Dawn to serve at TLOT weekly. Each week, I come away truly blessed. (My feet may hurt and I might be tired, but blessed truly)."
What has surprised you most?
"I think what surprised me the most is truly how little becomes much when we put it in the Master’s hands. What God has done with a willing servant who saw a need and decided to step out in faith and meet it over 10 years ago is remarkable. The breadth and the depth of the ministry really has grown immensely over the years. The amount of vital community support and volunteer participation keeps growing. More and more people (me included) are learning to look at our unsheltered friends as just that—friends."
What have you learned from those we serve?
"I have learned so much! Those we serve are individuals who have the same needs as us all—the need to be seen, heard, recognized, respected, laughed with and loved unconditionally. They have names, talents and abilities, families and stories, along with immense hardships. I may not be able to fix their situation, but I can give a smile, call them by name, serve a meal, wash their laundry, help with showers, give some essential supplies and make the day. I serve a little brighter in their lives. Thanks TLOT for the opportunity!"
What a beautiful reminder that ministry is not always about solving every problem. Sometimes it is simply about showing up, offering dignity, and letting people know they are seen and loved.
Thank you for faithfully serving each week and for allowing God to use you to be a light in the lives of our unsheltered friends. We are grateful for you and for the countless volunteers who help make this ministry possible.
"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased." — Hebrews 13:16
