To say that in the less than 30 days after being appointed as the new Salvation Army of Roanoke Corps Officers, Lieutenants Antonio and Shawnte Hodges have hit the ground running, would be an understatement.
From summer camp, to interviews, to attending community meeting, to throwing out the ceremonial pitch at the Salem Red Sox game for Christmas in July, the Lieutenants have hit the ground so fast that they’re leaving a trail of smoke behind.
So let’s get to know our new boots on the ground Corps Officers and their sweet kiddos!
Antonio Hodges was born into The Salvation Army and sensed God’s calling to officership at a young age. Raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, his early years were deeply shaped by ministry, summers spent at camp and conservatory, mission trips, and opportunities to serve. With a heart for people and a passion for leadership, Antonio also worked in the food service industry, where he opened restaurants and trained employees at the corporate level, skills that now serve him well in ministry.
In God’s perfect timing, Antonio married his high school sweetheart, and together they stepped out in faith to pursue full-time ministry. In 2021, they were commissioned as officers and began serving together in The Salvation Army. Antonio brings a joyful, hands-on spirit to everything he does, whether he’s playing brass, singing in worship, cooking up something delicious, or grilling in the backyard with his family. He finds his greatest joy in making memories with his wife and children while following God’s lead.
Now stepping into a new season in Roanoke, Antonio looks forward to building meaningful connections with the community, growing alongside the people he serves, and witnessing all the incredible things God has in store.
Shawnte Hodges is a passionate and purpose-driven Corps Officer who serves alongside her husband, finding joy in leading, loving, and discipling others. Originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, her faith was shaped early through life’s challenges and God’s constant presence. At age 12, she was introduced to The Salvation Army, reluctantly, but it quickly became her spiritual home and the place where she met her future husband, they have been married for 15 years. She holds degrees in Applied Behavioral Science, Psychology, and Practical Ministries, and spent years as a Behavioral Specialist, helping young people believe in what’s possible.
Shawnte was commissioned in 2021 and has since served with conviction, compassion, and a deep sense of gratitude for God’s grace. She believes ministry happens both in the pulpit and in everyday moments, through laughter, listening, and simply showing up with love. Outside the uniform, she enjoys reading, baking, spending time with her beautiful family, and occasionally dancing in the kitchen like no one’s watching, and winning every game during Family Game night. Her three children keep her grounded, laughing, and sometimes just a little bit tired. Shawnte finds her greatest joy in following God’s lead and watching Him work miracles in the most ordinary ways. She looks forward to all the memories to be made and the ways God will use her family in the great city of Roanoke.
Tayonna Hodges is the oldest of three siblings and proudly holds the title of the only daughter in the family. A recent graduate of Dan River High School, she’s preparing to begin an exciting new chapter as a college freshman this fall. Known for her bright spirit and love of all things pink, Tayonna enjoys reading, singing, dancing, and (very enthusiastically) asking her parents for money. She treasures family game nights, serves faithfully at her local Salvation Army corps, and is often found quietly capturing “mental photos” of special family moments.
Tayonna loves praise dancing, making her brothers laugh. She’s excited to explore her new home in Roanoke—especially visiting the famous star, checking out the malls, and hopefully meeting lifelong friends along the way. Tayonna is full of ambition, anchored in faith, and deeply connected to her family. Her future is bright, and she’s stepping into it with joy, style, and purpose.
Antonio Hodges Jr. is a soon-to-be 8th grader with a big heart, a sharp mind, and an even sharper sense of humor. A proud lover of math, coding, gaming, and good-natured wrestling matches with his baby brother, Antonio keeps his family on their toes and laughing constantly. His favorite color is blue. He plays the trumpet, is currently learning to master the keyboard (the musical kind, not just the gaming one), and loves anything that involves sound, strategy, or snacks.
After living four long, doughnut-deprived years, Antonio is most excited to finally live near a Krispy Kreme again, his sweet tooth is rejoicing already. He’s also looking forward to making new friends, exploring new places, and continuing to serve faithfully alongside his family at the corps.
Tayshawn Hodges is 2 years old and already running the show (just ask his family). He’s full of energy, charm, and just the right amount of mischief to keep everyone on their toes. Known lovingly as “Boss Baby,” Tayshawn loves snacks, naps, and finding creative new ways to bug his older siblings, who secretly adore him. He’s incredibly smart, endlessly curious, and has perfected the art of the “cute face” to get exactly what he wants (usually snacks he’s not supposed to have).
Tayshawn is looking forward to making new friends, discovering who the softies are that will sneak him treats, and exploring every inch of his new surroundings. Whether he's dancing in circles, yelling for juice, or giving the biggest hugs, he’s guaranteed to leave a little joy wherever he goes.

It’s no secret that Hurricane Helene has left folks still without power and water all over the South. And we’re still seeing it here in our very own community, and that’s a scary reality! It’s also no secret that when our community suffers, we faithfully step into action! But we can’t do it alone. It’s a tremendous blessing that we have friends like WDBJ7 who continually support our mission to be there for those in the Roanoke Valley! We are one community, and together, we can give Hope back to the Hopeless.

Hurricane Helene left so many without. Without a home to return to, without power to keep food in the refrigerator, without water to shower and drink. Let's come together and ensure we don't leave them without Hope.
