Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education and service. Kids Soar was initiated in September 1989 by the United Methodist Women of Trinity UMC as an outreach for children in downtown neighborhoods. Weekly meetings began with a warm meal, and as the program's reputation grew, so did the number of volunteers. Now, Kids Soar (previously known as Community Outreach Program) offers
various programs catering to the needs of children, youth, and adults. Kids Soar is a faith based, nonprofit organization located inside Windsor Hills UMC and is an advance special of the UM Virginia Conference #5004. The cornerstone of our efforts is the literacy after-school program, operating Monday through Friday from 2-6pm, serving 48 children and their families with literacy services. Our aim is to provide exemplary after-school care that prioritizes homework completion, supports the five pillars of literacy, and fosters healthy family and caregiver relationships to ensure children's success. The Youth program targets 6th to 8th graders, meeting twice weekly to foster their personal development. The mission of Kids Soar is to disrupt the cycle of poverty through education and service. We employ a research-based reading program and trained teachers to enhance school learning, using books that promote character building, empathy, vocabulary growth, and comprehension skills. To maintain the bond between families, their children, and caregivers, Kids Soar organizes a family night weekly. This event encourages parents to actively participate and acquire new skills, reinforcing their crucial role in their child's ongoing success. Additionally, we collaborate with various organizations to provide our families with essential skills and knowledge in areas they require or have expressed interest in, such as financial literacy, parenting, community awareness, health, and safety.
