A big win for safer cycling in Roanoke ๐ŸŽ‰

Last week, the City of Roanoke, Virginia - Government City Council unanimously passed the Vision Zero Roanoke Safety Action Plan!

Here's what it means and why we're so excited about it:

0๏ธโƒฃ The Vision: Vision Zero Roanoke is a commitment to eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2035, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

๐Ÿ›ฃ The Action Plan: The Safety Action Plan is a new set of principles for engineering roads, educating travelers, and creating a sense of collective responsibility. It's where the rubber meets the road and policy becomes practice.

๐Ÿ“„๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿš—๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿฆฝ๐Ÿ›ด The Policy: The City also adopted updates to its Complete Streets Policy. Complete Streets are streets that safely accommodate users of all types, ages, and abilities, including pedestrians, transit riders, and motorists, as well as light individual transportation modes such as electric scooters, motorized wheelchairs, and bicycles. Through the Complete Streets policy updates, the City of Roanoke commits to Vision Zero and Safe System design principles that recognize traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable and unacceptable.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Vision Zero over the past few years!

๐Ÿ“ฃ 1 more day to take the Wiley Drive low water bridge replacement survey!

The City of Roanoke, Virginia - Government is collecting public input on the Wiley Drive bridge replacement and greenway closure, and your voice matters. The bridge replacement will impact greenway access and safe cycling and pedestrian connectivity in our community.

The survey takes just a few minutes. Tell the City we need a safe detour for greenway users!

โœ… Big news for safer streets in Roanoke: the Vision Zero Safety Action Plan has been approved by the Planning Commission!

This is a meaningful step toward reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our roads, and it's the result of sustained community advocacy. Thank you to everyone who attended public meetings, submitted comments, and shared their support over the past year.

๐Ÿ“… Next step: City Council will review (and hopefully approve) the plan tomorrow night, Monday May 18 at 7pm.

๐Ÿชง Show up if you can! Public attendance and support from the cycling and safe streets community sends a strong message to Council that Roanokers want this plan approved.
