Today is the second to last day of our , and we are looking at the “near enemies” of self-compassion. “Near enemies” is a buddhist concept that describes a quality that is similar enough that it is mistaken for the real thing, but is actually a type of opposite. Often times we think self-compassion is something it isn’t, which is what this post covers. Learning what to discern it from can help us better cultivate it.

The information of our self-compassion week is adapted and quoted from the work of Tim Desmond, LMFT, renowned psychotherapist and buddhist practitioner.

Tomorrow: The key ingredients of self-compassion, aka how we can cultivate for ourselves. Thanks for following us!

Having a low self-esteem and feeling bad about yourself is bad for mental health, but having too high of a self-esteem can also cause problems. We don’t want to swing from an inferiority complex to superiority complex. And when assessing ourselves under the umbrella of self-esteem, it inevitably leads to comparing ourselves to others, leading to a value judgment (whether we are better or worse). Too low or too high of a self-esteem can be an obstacle to practicing self-compassion.

When we focus on self-compassion, it doesn’t really matter how we compare to other people. What matters is kindness and seeing ourselves clearly

This information is from the works of Tim Desmond, LMFT. Tomorrow, we will look at the “near enemies” of self-compassion. Thank you for joining us for our

While there are many similarities between empathy and compassion, empathy is about connecting with another person's experience, where compassion is seeing another suffer and feeling inclined to do something about it. You could even say that empathy happens first, and compassion may then follow. Both are cornerstones of being a great healthcare professional, but compassion is about action.

Since we are talking about self-compassion, we also wanted to take a moment to break down the key ingredients of compassion: understanding that the other is suffering + understanding they're doing the best they can with what they have (and are not necessarily choosing to suffer) + we ALL struggle, are trying our best, and are connected in this way and many more. What does it then look like to turn that recipe inward, toward ourselves?
