🎗️ What happens after childhood cancer treatment ends?

In this conversation with Ashley Brooks, childhood liver cancer survivor, registered nurse, and author of Chemo Kids 3, we talk about what survivorship can look like after treatment.

Ashley shares about follow-up care, late effects, hearing loss, chemo brain, school accommodations, mental health, grief, therapy, and the importance of community throughout survivorship.

What makes Chemo Kids 3 so special is the way these big and sometimes difficult topics are explained in a child-friendly and approachable way, helping children and families better understand what life after cancer treatment can look like.

One message that stayed with me was Ashley’s reminder to take things one day at a time and not be afraid to lean on the community around you. 💛

💛 More than just goodies on a table…

At CureFest for Childhood Cancer, we had patients, survivors, families, and grieving families stop by the BeholdBeGold table, each carrying a story that deserves to be seen, heard, remembered, and supported. 🎗️

A very special THANK YOU to Sue Self, our “Scentsy Sue!” 💜 Sue generously donated Scentsy goodies for our CureFest outreach, helping us bring a little extra joy to those who stopped by our table. What makes her generosity even more special is the heart behind it. Sue has a genuine passion for children and for helping our childhood cancer community.

In this video, Sue shares about Cam Thepsimuong, a beloved local teen who faced osteosarcoma and left a lasting impact on so many. Sue became close with Cam and his family throughout his journey, and she continues to honor his memory by showing up for our local childhood cancer community. 💛

Cam’s life mattered, his story matters, and his impact continues. 🎗️

These goodies may seem like something small to pick up from an outreach table, but to us, they represent so much more. They help create moments of connection, raise awareness, and remind our childhood cancer community that they are seen, they are heard, and they are supported.

Sue, thank you for helping us create those moments! Your generosity, your heart for children, and the love you continue to pour into this community mean so much to all of us at BeholdBeGold. 💛💜

🎶✨ Special Guest Artist Spotlight: Carol Joy! ✨🎨

We are so excited to welcome Carol Joy to Paint for a Purpose: Going Gold tomorrow! 💛🎗️

Carol is a local artist, children’s book author, and musician who grew up in Mérida, Venezuela, surrounded by a musical family and playing the cuatro since age six. For her, music is a universal language of hope and connection that brings together art, storytelling, and joy.

In this interview, Carol shares a little about her story, what music means to her, and why supporting childhood cancer survivors through community and creativity is so meaningful to her.

She’ll be performing live during both sessions tomorrow while guests paint, connect, and enjoy the event. 🎶💛

We’re so excited to spotlight Jack Jennings, a 19-year-old childhood cancer survivor, college student, and BeholdBeGold volunteer who will be joining us at Paint for a Purpose: Going Gold this Saturday! 💛🎨

Jack is currently studying biology and hopes to pursue a future career working with animals. In his free time, he enjoys Dungeons & Dragons, other games, and finding ways to bring positivity to others.

When we asked Jack what being a childhood cancer survivor means to him, he shared:

“Being a cancer survivor means that I look at the world to find positivity and be a source to make someone smile.” 💛

Over the years, Jack and his mom, Lis, have continued showing up at survivorship events and educational opportunities focused on life after childhood cancer and the late effects of treatment.

We’ve loved seeing Jack stay connected to the survivorship community, and we are especially grateful that he is now choosing to give back as a survivor volunteer at this year’s event.

That is exactly the kind of community BeholdBeGold hopes to continue building, a place where survivors can feel seen, supported, connected, and empowered to give back in their own way. 🎗️

🗣️🎗️ Speaker Spotlight: Kaya Stone

We’re so excited to introduce one of the meaningful voices you’ll hear at Paint for a Purpose: Going Gold! 🎗️🎨

Kaya Stone will be joining us during our second painting session from 5:00 to 7:00 PM to share her perspective as a childhood cancer survivor and local artist.

Kaya was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age 12, and today she is 22 years old and 8 years cancer free. While she is cancer free, she continues to experience late effects from treatment that can impact her day to day life. 💛

For Kaya, survivorship means sharing her story so others facing cancer do not feel alone. She has also shared how meaningful art is to her because it gives her a way to express how she feels, be open about her experience, and create connection with others.

That is exactly why survivor voices matter.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, events like this help our community better understand that survivorship continues long after treatment ends. They also create space to support survivors, raise awareness, strengthen community connections, support a local nonprofit, and support a local small business. 💛

We are so grateful to have Kaya as part of our BeholdBeGold community and cannot wait for you to hear her story.
