How about this for a little holiday magic? Our amazing volunteers, Cecile and Lisa, spent some time on the Greenway this past week, clearing a mass of invasive English ivy from this holly tree. Look how much they removed! We're confident this tree is breathing easier now, and grateful for their hard work. 👏🌳

THANK YOU to all our volunteer Tree Stewards, and to the Roanoke friends & neighbors willing to tackle this task on their own properties. (Hint: clearing your trees of ivy is easier than you think! Check out the link in the comments for our simple, two-step how-to video. You can do it!).

And just like that … It’s planting season!! 🌱 A big THANK YOU to our Tree Steward volunteers 👏🏼, who planted ten beautiful new trees on Maiden and Westover today. Here’s hoping they bring lots of joy to our neighbors in Grandin for many years to come … and here’s to more green in our city! 🍃🌳

Check out our fantastic volunteers at work … and some AMAZING tree specimens from today’s tree measuring!! 🤩

This morning, our Tree Stewards gathered to collect data for the Virginia Big Tree Registry. This giant catalpa in Sunnybrook Estates wowed us — at 61.5 feet tall with a 75-foot spread, it’s a stunner! Afterward, we stopped by Highland Park in Old Southwest to measure a stately gem not too far from the dog park (hint: If you want to create your own tree walk, this park is filled with ancient and beautiful specimens!).

Want to find out more about Virginia’s Tech’s big tree registry … or perhaps suggest a special tree for measurement? Check out all the info here:

Every once in a blue moon, we Tree Stewards put down our pruning shears and shovels to just have some fun together … and yesterday was that kind of day! We loved cheering on the Salem Red Sox from seats generously donated by our own Tree Steward Don Wilson from Evergreen Memorial Trust. Thank you, Don, for thinking of us … and thanks to all the friends who made it out for some fun in the sun!!

Today’s planting was an immensely special one.

This morning, our crew of volunteers met at Horton Park and Perry Park in Northwest Roanoke to plant 12 young oaks — a part of Roanoke’s Planting Peace project. Each tree is dedicated to a victim of gun violence whose case remain unsolved.

The effort — launched by the city’s Gun Violence Prevention Commission, in collaboration with the police department, PLAY Roanoke and the Tree Stewards — hopes to help bring healing and peace to our community.

It’s no coincidence that oaks have historically represented strength, endurance and wisdom — all things we hope folks can find each time they step into the cool shade of these leafy limbs. We’re honored to have been a small part of this project, and to have planted today alongside family members of those affected. Here’s to more green, more healing and more peace, right here in Roanoke. 🌳

Happy Roanoke! Did you catch our Tree Stewards crew at the Clean Valley Council Earth Day celebration on Saturday? We loved meeting some new neighbors in Grandin Village , passing out free trees and celebrating this beautiful green planet we call Home. 🌎🌳🍃 Hope you find a special way to take care of our world today. 🌱 We’re grateful to be a little part of that effort here in our city!

Let’s get this new year started right! 💪🏻✂️🌳 You might know that trees use the winter months to prepare for a productive season ahead … and Tree Stewards do, too! 🙂 Today, we met for a tool-sharpening workshop to gear up (literally) for planting and pruning season. Thank you to our generous hosts and the friends and stewards who came out to join in the fun. Can’t wait for spring! 🍃
