Halifax- Warren Smart Start is excited to announce that we are again accepting applications for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library!

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a FREE program that mails an age appropriate book every month to children until their 5th birthday. Every child in Halifax and Warren Counties aged 0-5 is eligible.

After pausing for several months due to lack of funding, we now have the resources to enroll new children again. During the enrollment pause, previously enrolled children continued to receive monthly books.

Applications are available from Halifax – Warren Smart Start. If your agency needs applications, please contact Magda or Cynthia at 252-537-5621 or [email protected] or [email protected] and we will be happy to provide you with more applications.

Completed applications can be dropped off at our office at 1139 Roanoke Avenue, Roanoke Rapids. We can also arrange for pick-up of completed applications from your agency, or you can mail them to Halifax – Warren Smart Start, PO Box 339, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free books to children from birth until they begin school in participating areas.

Read Across America is today. I received an invitation to come to Scotland Neck Elementary Leadership Academy’s PreK classroom to read a book. I choose, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” in honor of it being Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. Read Across America was established in 1997 by the NEA (National Education Association) and it is done annually. I was delighted to sit with the students at their eye level and have them chime in with me as I read the book. Mrs. Rose Williams and Mrs. Evelyn Hines have done an amazing job in assisting the students with early literacy. They were able to quickly decipher the rhyming words patterns in the story. They were very eager to join me in this endeavor and I even received a few appreciation goodies from the school and the classroom. My motto for enhancing language and literacy in young children is to “Read, Read, Read”.
