The beginning of a very big journey. 🐢

Did you know sea turtle hatchlings that have been in rehabilitation for more than 24 hours have already used the energy from their initial “swimming frenzy,” the burst of swimming that begins when they first enter the ocean?

Because of this, and following FWC guidelines, Loggerhead Marinelife Center ensures these hatchlings are taken by boat at least five miles offshore for release. They are placed on or near sargassum, where they can find food and shelter as they begin life at sea. 💙

If you find a disoriented or distressed hatchling, call FWC at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) or LMC’s 24-hour Sea Turtle Rescue Line at 561-603-0211. Hatchlings can also be brought to our 24-hour hatchling drop-off cooler located at the front entrance of the Center.

Wishing these little ones safe travels ahead. 🌊

All marine turtle images taken in Florida were obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to this or other turtles. Images were acquired while conducting authorized activities pursuant to FWC MTP 086.

Filbert has entered the chat. 🐢💙

This juvenile green sea turtle arrived at Loggerhead Marinelife Center after being found entangled in fishing line with a flipper injury, ingested fishing line, and fibropapillomatosis (FP) tumors. Since then, he’s received continued care from our veterinary team, including the removal of several FP tumors.

And as you can see, Filbert has certainly worked up an appetite along the way! 🥬

Filbert is symbolically adoptable! Your adoption helps support the care and rehabilitation of sea turtle patients like him. Become part of Filbert’s journey through a symbolic adoption on our website! 🌊

From stranded to swimming free. 🌊🐢

A few weeks ago, Dempsey, a juvenile green sea turtle, returned home to the ocean after receiving care at Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

Dempsey originally stranded in Hobe Sound with fibropapillomatosis (FP), a missing front flipper, and ingested fishing line. During rehabilitation, Dempsey passed 14 inches of fishing line and received antibiotics and continued care from our veterinary team.

With each milestone, Dempsey grew stronger and eventually reached the moment we work toward for every patient: a return home to the ocean. 💙

Dempsey’s story is an important reminder of the impact our actions can have on marine life. Always properly dispose of fishing line and other debris to help keep our ocean safe for sea turtles and all who call it home.🐢

Ever wonder what a sea turtle rescue looks like? 🐢 Here’s one example of the many rescues our team responds to!

Residents called our 24/7 stranding hotline after this turtle was found floating near a dock in their community. Our team quickly responded, safely picked up the turtle, and brought it back to LMC for evaluation and care.

From responding to turtles in need to providing medical treatment, rehabilitation, and everything in between, this is just one part of what a day can look like at Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
