Riverwoods Preservation Council

Riverwoods Preservation Council A group of resident volunteers dedicated to preserving the unique ecological heritage of Riverwoods IL The RPC has conducted a variety of public presentations.

The RPC was incorporated on July 6, 2006, as a tax-exempt, non-profit community organization. The RPC was formed to address local resident concern for the health and future of Riverwoods ecology. The RPC’s objective is to help protect what makes Riverwoods unique - woodlands that the state of Illinois considers endangered - its ancient trees, its plant and animal inhabitants, and it overall ecolog

ical system. A specific goal is to attain and preserve an ecologically sound balance of animals, plants and development in Riverwoods, Illinois and nearby areas. The RPC attempts to achieve this by: 1) providing a forum for discussing environmental issues that affect our Village, 2) providing education which promotes environmental and ecological awareness for Riverwoods’ residents and the general public and 3) promoting environmentally sound practices, including managing properties for environmental restoration and preservation. Although from time to time the organization becomes an advocate on these matters, none of the grant funding or matching efforts will be used for advocacy in any form. The RPC undertakes a variety of activities to fulfill its mission. Frequently the central topic has been the flora and fauna of the wonderful Riverwoods environment. Speakers have included a representative of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department, a biologist from Ryerson Nature Preserve, an expert from the Morton Arboretum, local arborists, the owner and manager of a wild-bird sanctuary, and an architect specializing in environmentally-sensitive construction. Articles are provided on how Riverwoods presents a great opportunity to learn about our role in the natural environment, and to act on that knowledge to preserve the environment for future generations. The RPC's has produced a book, In Our Own Backyard, that was distributed without charge to all homes in Riverwoods in late 2008. The RPC is entirely composed of resident volunteers supported financially by Riverwoods citizens. The RPC has enjoyed a long partnership with the Village of Riverwoods in its endeavors. For example, a significant Woodland Health Study was recently concluded with 50% of the needed funding coming from the RPC and 50% from the Village. The RPC has taken on the responsibility for managing the Village’s annual Clean Up Day. The RPC regularly submits articles to the Riverwoods’ Village Voice newsletter, on topics including tree health, proper mulching, environmentally sensitive construction and water management, as well as deer habitat and related issues.

Purple Prairie Clover is a staple legume of sunny, diverse plantings in medium to dry soils. This plant is not picky when it comes to the soil characteristics, as long as the site is well-drained. The birds are migrating. If possible turn off outside lights tonight help out the birds

🌙 LIGHTS OUT CHICAGO 🌙

Migration Alert – April 23, 2026 🚨

This is part of spring migration, as birds return north from their winter homes to begin nesting and raising their young. 🌸

The BirdCast model predicts high-intensity bird migration over our region tonight, with millions of birds flying overhead as they return north for the spring. 🐦✨

Please help protect these migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lights between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Bright lights can disorient birds traveling at night, leading to dangerous and often fatal collisions.

🔌 How you can help:
• Turn off or dim exterior lighting
• Close curtains or blinds
• Avoid lighting areas that may attract birds
