Calendar of events: https://teamup.com/ksbf20b080cdefb132 The Marine Corps League perpetuates the traditions and spirit of ALL Marines and FMF Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains who proudly wear or who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the Corps. It takes great pride in crediting its founding in 1923 to World War I hero, then Major General Commandant John A. It takes equal pride in its Federal

Charter, approved by An Act of the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United States of America and signed and approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937. The League is the only Federally Chartered Marine Corps related veterans organization in the country. Since its earliest days, the Marine Corps League has enjoyed the support and encouragement of the active duty and Reserve establishments of the U. Marine Corps. Today, the League boasts a membership of more than 76,000 men and women, officer and enlisted, active duty, Reserve Marines, honorably discharged Marine Veterans and qualified FMF Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains and is one of the few Veterans Organizations that experiences increases in its membership each year. The Marine Corps League is headed by an elected National Commandant, with 14 elected National Staff Officers who serve as trustees. The National Board of Trustees coordinates the efforts of 49 department, or state, entities and the activities of over 1100 community-based detachments located throughout the United States and overseas. The day-to-day operations of the League are under the control of the National Executive Director with the responsibility for the management and direction of all programs, activities, and affairs of the Marine Corps League as well as supervising the National Headquarters staff. The prime authority of the League is derived from its Congressional charter and from its annual National Convention held each August in different major U.S. cities throughout the nation. It is a not-for-profit organization within the provisions of the Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c) (4), with a special group exemption letter which allows for contributions to the Marine Corps League, its Auxiliary and subsidiary units, to be tax deductible by the donor

Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1918, was discharged after World War I ended before he could see action, reenlisted as a private, and spent the next four decades making himself into the most decorated Marine in American history — not through any single dramatic moment but through an unbroken record of doing the hardest thing available in every engagement he was ever part of.
He served in Haiti through the 1920s, hunting the Caco rebels through mountain terrain with small units and virtually no support. He served in Nicaragua through the early 1930s, earning his first two Navy Crosses in operations against guerrilla forces in conditions that broke most officers sent there. He fought at Guadalcanal in World War II, earning his third and fourth Navy Crosses in some of the most brutal jungle combat of the Pacific campaign. By the time he arrived in Korea in 1950 he had been in active combat operations for longer than most of his officers had been alive.
In late November 1950 his regiment was part of the force caught at the Chosin Reservoir when Chinese forces entered the Korean War in massive numbers. The temperature dropped to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Weapons froze. Morphine froze. Blood plasma froze. Marines held ammunition inside their clothing to keep it warm enough to fire. His regiment — along with the rest of the 1st Marine Division — was surrounded by an estimated 120,000 Chinese soldiers.
When an officer reported to Puller that they were completely encircled he said: Good. Now we can shoot in any direction.
He led his regiment in the fighting withdrawal from Chosin — 78 miles through Chinese-held mountain terrain in blizzard conditions. He walked at the front of the column. When offered a vehicle he refused. The Marines brought their dead with them on stretchers rather than leave them on the Chinese-held ground. The Chinese suffered an estimated 37,500 casualties attempting to stop 15,000 Marines from reaching the coast.
Puller received his fifth Navy Cross for the Chosin campaign. No Marine has ever received more. He retired in 1955 after 37 years of service.
His son Lewis Puller Jr. served in Vietnam in 1968 and lost both legs and parts of both hands to a booby-trapped howitzer round. Chesty Puller — the most decorated Marine in history, a man who had walked at the front of columns under fire for thirty years — said his son was more of a Marine than he had ever been.
He died on October 11 1971. At every Marine Corps formal dinner, at the end of the meal, an officer stands and raises a glass to Chesty Puller. Every Marine in the room stands. He has been dead for more than fifty years. They still stand.
