"Did You Know?"...

Danny Glover.
— lived with epilepsy through his teens and early adulthood. Seizures were part of his real story long before Hollywood ever knew his name. He built his career in spite of a condition most people still misunderstand. "National Epilepsy Awareness Month" needs anchors like this — real histories that cut through the noise.
“You’ve seen the movies. You never saw the seizures.” Recognize Epilepsy: Beyond the Seizures

Did you know Leonardo Da Vinci has been linked to epilepsy in the historical record as a pattern of described symptoms, documented episodes, and behavioral clues noted by observers of his time. Several Renaissance writings reference sudden “fainting-like spells,” momentary lapses, and brief episodes of altered awareness that align with modern descriptions of focal seizures. These accounts are sparse, but consistent enough that many neurologists and medical historians classify him among historical figures suspected of epilepsy.
Epilepsy did not limit his output. The symptoms appear to have existed alongside — not against — his creative intelligence. The precision in his anatomical drawings, the engineering manuscripts, and the experimental methods in his notebooks indicate a mind operating at exceptional capacity while navigating neurological variance. His career undercuts the narrative that epilepsy and achievement are incompatible.

“Freedom had a face, and it lived with seizures.”

Harriet Tubman is celebrated as a hero who led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad. What many don’t realize is that she also lived with epilepsy—a condition that developed after a severe head injury during her youth. The blow caused her to experience seizures, intense headaches, and sudden “sleep” episodes that could strike without warning.

Despite this, Tubman never slowed down. She used her visions, often triggered by her neurological condition, as sources of guidance and strength. What others might have seen as a limitation, she turned into conviction. Her courage was unshaken, her purpose unwavering.

Tubman’s story is more than one of freedom—it’s a testament to resilience in the face of invisible battles. Her life challenges the outdated belief that epilepsy defines a person’s capability.

During National Epilepsy Awareness Month, we honor Harriet Tubman as proof that epilepsy cannot silence strength or limit purpose. Her legacy reminds us that heroes aren’t defined by what they endure—but by how they rise through it. Recognize the power within epilepsy. Recognize strength. Recognize Epilepsy.
